Tow Pro install and finicky electronics

    Hi All,

I’m sure like a lot of us we love these cars but sometimes little quirks just test our patience to get them running right.

My story starts with a purchase of a caravan and the need to install a brake controller. Bit of research and I’d settled on the RedArc Tow-Pro. Fair bit of additional research on how to do the install and off I go.
Basic scenario is the controller dial at the front to the left of the steering wheel , the actual module to be mounted in the right hand side of the boot.

I’d seen some pictures and I’m not a fan of modifications that can easily be reversed so I decided not to drill a hole in the front of the dash. Instead I decided to make a small panel to mount the dial , and also a Voltage gauge to measure Main and Secondary battery. I did end up with a small cable hole but is easy to cover and would be out of site normally if I take this out.
I covered the panel in a slight padding and black vinyl , I was worried I’d hit my leg, but to date I haven’t.

I spliced some wires into the loom at the trailer control module in the rear and used connectors to connect to the Tow Pro unit. Again I can remove it easily.

Yesterday afternoon I felt good, all wired in, nice and neat all tested and ready for the van delivery.
My wife got a call from my sons school, someone’s got COVID and go and get our son tested….. Jump in the car and now I have an Airbag light on the dash.
I had my IIDT tool in the car and whilst waiting in the drive through queue I tried clearing alarms but it kept coming back. The alarm just said “0xB Battery Disconnect Unit 1” Back home bit more research, starting to panic as there were post’s about the SRM module, and maybe I’ll need to buy one of them. Also confusing info about a yellow connector near the battery.

I disconnected the battery a few times , cleared the alarm no still no change. The yellow connector looked looked perfectly clean and well connected. I thought I’d try one more thing before I call in quits and worry about it later. Disconnect the battery again, pulled the yellow connector apart, large spray of contact cleaner, wiped everything down, reconnected the battery, cleared the alarms …….and this time it didn’t come back. A couple of engine restarts just to confirm and all is now good.

If it wasn’t for all the nice things modern cars give us … and the stupid prices of older cars I’d consider going back to the 2 door Rangie

Darren, I like the little panel you constructed to house the redraw etc. How did you run the cable rearward to the redraw unit?

    Hi Michael,

Behind the carpet on the transmission tunnel , across the front floor to the sill panel.
Then it was a matter of removing the tread plate and trim pieces on the B and C pillar and managed to run the cable in sort of a slot that exists where the tread plates clip in. It’s a bit fiddly but I took my time and managed to not break any plastic clips. I think I bought the 4m extension cable Tow Pro controller to reach between dial and module
