2012 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 Restricted Performance Issue

This is a beautiful car - well-cared for and lovely to drive.

Owned for around 12 months with no issues - car has around 100,000 on the clock. During this time we acquired a new caravan (bigger and heavier) and undertook a number of trips - some lengthy. Car seemed perfectly capable of towing the van though it did need to work harder to get moving - and on hills.

Took the car into service in September 2021 and noticed in the days following that the automatic gearbox was "indecisive" at times in selecting gears - would result in a slight shudder as it tried to decide which gear to select.

Took the van on a short trip and around half way experienced the dreaded "Restricted Performance" message. Power disappeared entirely - quite a freaky event when travelling down a road with others behind you. Anyway, shutdown the engine and the car reset. Couple of minutes later same thing. Couldn't attribute it to anything - ie wasn't powering up a steep hill. Reset and managed to get to where we were going. Was diagnosed as a sensor around the EGR which was replaced. Gearbox oil also replaced with a metal cover and filter installed. Gearbox shudder has stopped though I have noticed (occasionally) that I have to be quite assertive with the throttle from time to time to shift down a gear.

Next trip we experienced a restricted performance again but it felt slightly different as I can still rev the engine quite high but there's just no power. Less stressful event. The yellow engine light came on this time on around the third occasion. Limped home - and took the car to the garage - with the restricted performance happening - as it happened on the way in (without the van in tow) and no significant revs.

Car has been in the garage for a week - and we don't seem to be any closer to identifying the issue. They have tested the hoses extensively - no problems. They have identified that the replacement oil drain has not been installed and that was the focus initially - attempts to convince Land Rover to repair at their expense as its covered by a technical bulletin (LTB00513). No joy with Land Rover - and they won't sell the tools to the mechanic so that he can do the job. Asked them whether they had checked the Change Over valve - and today they confirmed that they have run a vacuum test - and its good. Currently looking to run a smoke test to check the hoses. They have discounted the oil drain as there are no smoke issues.

Does anyone have any ideas? We seem to be running out of options. I wondered whether it might relate to the gearbox (overheating possibly).

Other questions. They don't seem to be able to locate silicon hoses in Australia for the 4.4. Anyone know whether these are available in Aus?
Should I get the drain fixed regardless once we have resolved the immediate issue? Does fixing it prevent other events occurring. I'm thinking that towing the van will clear any oil - so it's a waste of money getting it remedied - but I'm not a mechanic!!

I love the car - but the relationship is somewhat strained at the moment as we've had to cancel our Xmas trip!!

    Regards, Alex.

Not a mechanic and this is just an observation. Friend had similar issue with EGR and the fun of losing power on a fast road with traffic behind them. One computer chip and you are stuck. When checking the vehicle over their garage also replaced the throttle body as said this was also playing up. Now no direct connection between these items but might be worth a look

If the 4 original bellows type of hoses are still fitted then replace them with silicon hose, regardless of not appearing to be the cause although there would be at least a slight trace of oily residue if one was leaking.

Has the MAP sensor been cleaned? Use only a spray cleaner.

The turbo oil drain can't cause restricted performance.

Alex on top of what Graeme said, have a look at the fuel water sensor and filter ! You said you have been travelling, so there is a possibility you might have got some bad diesel in your travels. When away from town I always use the truck bowser at remote locations as that fuel tank has the highest turnover rate, so less chance of moisture getting in the fuel.

    Replacing Hoses with Silicon

Thanks for the suggestions!! Will have these items checked.

Graeme. Thanks for your input. I suggested replacing the hoses with silicon hoses at the garage who have been looking after me and they have struggled to locate them. They can find hoses designed for the 3.6 litre engine but none for the 4.4? And have been advised that the 3.6 won't fit on the 4.4? Any hints as to where we could source the silicon hoses from?

    Regards, Alex.

Buy straight 70mm ID hose long enough to get 4 x 55mm lengths. Mine are 60mm long but 5mm shorter will make them easier to fit.
eg 2.75" (70 mm) x 254 mm Straight Silicon hose pipe Black 2 Yr Wty | eBay

    I re-used the original clamps.

I have a L322 Range Rover MY2012 V8 4.4l myself. In the throttle body there is a small gear that bridges the electrical motor and the throttle valve itself. A few years back I got the restricted performance warning. After spending some time fault finding it turned out to be this gear that was at fault. Instead of buying a complete throttle body I did some CAD and 3D print copies of this gear. Some printed gear have lasted only a few kilometers and others can last for over 1000 km. It mainly comes down to the post print process and resin (I have a Form 2 printer). Recently I got the warning again and thought it was the gear, which surprised me because I recently changed to a greatly improved resin. Turned out it is not the gear as it is pristine condition. The warning is intermittent and that as bit worrying as now I do not know really where to start. I am able to swap the gears in just a few minutes if they break but now....

Have you had any luck in your fault finding efforts?

    //Peter
