    Any advice on a 2007 tdv8 vs 2010 tdv8 buy?

    Hi All,

I've been a regular lurker here with a D4 originally and now a Delica .
I'm looking to get out and about on longer off-road trips with a small hybrid (probably 10' - 1700kg).

I'm looking at two options for an FFRR:

    2007, low KM tdv8 (3.6):
    carsales.com.au

    2010, lowish KM tdv8 (4.4):
    carsales.com.au

I am leaning toward the 2007 as it can take 18" rims, it drives beautifully (I tried it), and the purchase price (negotiated down a little) gives me plenty of room for a major service (hoses, lines, transmission, and induction/egr clean). I can also get an easy-enough remap to take it to close to similar power as the 4.4. However, the 4.4 is newer, more comfy (by other's accounts), smoother, more economical, and possibly more reliable. With 20" wheels apparently being fine on rough roads these days that's also a good buy. The 2007 has has most services but missed one annual service when it was stored and de-registered once upon a time (inside, sealed-ish environment). It looks very clean, I'd just be worried about plastic and rubber bits perishing given age and lack of use.

For the 2007 I'm budgeting about $3,500 for the service to replace a bunch of rubber bits and do the transmission, and $3000-$4000 for rims and tyres as replacement (can get some of this back by selling existing rims). For the 2010 i don't need new rims, can get away with current tyres, and don't need to replace so much of the bits so would only do a major service (transmission and all fluids).

    Main questions:
    1. Is the 2007 one a crazy idea? (too old, too many potential issues?)
    2. Is the 2010 one going to be terrible as an outback touring vehicle?
    3. Should i only be looking at the 3.6 or only the 4.4 or are they substitutable as outback tourers?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
I know i can get a D4, i just can't justify paying the same (or more) price for a D4 as for an FFRR. Most driving will be bitumen and easy gravel roads with the occasional major 4x4 trip (e.g. simpson, googs, north WA+NT, etc.).

Thanks in advance for any help at all, and hope to be on here soon as a contributing RR owner!

    A 2010 4.4 TDV8 will be MY11 built in the later part of 2010. MY2010 has the 3.6 TDV8. The 4.4 has the 8-speed gbox.

I've been running 275/55R20 (BFG KO2 then Pirelli AT+) on my MY12 which overall have been fine for outback travel, not withstanding that 1 tyre was destroyed when I hit a large lump of limestone on a Nullabor back track. However in a few days I'll change to 255/60R19 GG AT3 on D4 rims (I have 6 + 2 more spare rims) to reduce overall size to 31" for a number of reasons. The GG's have the same LI 113 load rating and sidewall height as the AT+.

    Thanks Graeme,

That makes the 4.4 seem capable enough, and tyres to not be as much of an issue as they might have been several years ago.
I do get a bit of a feeling that the 3.6 is well tested and has no apparent major issues that can't be dealt with before hand. This does appeal to me, as does saving about $10k on the price, but is going for a 2007 Vogue just asking for trouble with rubber bits and electrics?

I'm getting the 3.6 checked up as soon as possible here in Adelaide. If that is fine, other than service items i plan to work on anyway, I'll likely be looking to buy that one. then to source 18" rims and get it all sorted before some test trips!

Happy to receive any indications that this is a silly idea from those in the know still though!

CVDs turn chewed-up sand-hill approaches into carpet, changing between soft and hard just at the right moment to allow the wheels to maintain even contact pressure.

    That is an expensive 2007

Other things to note if you are going to tow. The 3.6 has 490kg of payload the 4.4 has 390kg

I might have to rethink what I am going to ask for my 2008 L322 TDV8 It currently has 114000 on it.

    Electrical...

The earlier L322 will have electrical gremlins check the bluetooth I would bet its dead mine is and its a common issue. I use an aux port BT adapter for calls and streaming.
I have a 2010 D4 the electricals seem a bit more reliable in the later cars. Everything works in the D4.

Hi Mowog, yep prices have certainly jumped up a bit...
I sold a D4 for 32,000 just as covid hit (<100,000km 2.7). I would be lucky to find one like that now, let alone get it for less than 45k. At the time it was a necessary sale (not covid, other) so I don't regret it, but it is frustrating.
So a 2007 L322 TDV8 for 41k with low kilometers at that price is very appealling compared to the D4 alternatives.

Point taken on the electronics - I guess it is D3 era where the D4s tended to have no (or few) gremlins in comparison. I'm not really bothered by no bluetooth though but those other gremlins might be a bit more of a worry, particularly with the 'chip crisis' currently going on.

So, do i go for $52-$59k for a 2010-11 4.4 TDV8 or put that money toward $4k of fixing the 2007 l322 and another $3-4k toward 18" rims and tyres? My thinking is that the 3.6 is a very reliable engine if the pheripherals are maintained and having that extra 100kg is handy compared to the 4.4tdv8 model. Is this silly thinking?

Car is booked in next week for a check up here in radelaide...

If anyone else has a 4.4 they want to sell me for a good price .........

I didn't intend to put you off the earlier L322. I really like my 2008 and its a far better car to drive than my D4. That 3.6 TDV8 is such a sweet engine

Ive owned a 3.6 L322 and think its the pick. The 4.4 performs better especially with the ZF8 speed, but is more complex. I think the sweet spot is the facelift 3.6 with better electrics, so I would wait for one of those to turn up.

The MY07 L322 was the first of the tdv8, the MY08 had some changes apparently.

    Thanks RAR,

I've got the check happening tomorrow at an Indie here in Adelaide (land rover specialist). We'll see how that comes out. I've already telegraphed that I'll be seeking to make it a reliable outback tourer so will put 3.5k or so into servicing (hoses, plastic bits, induction system clean) and major maintenance (front airbags, transmission, diff oils, etc.). So will see how we go.

Maybe someone knows a good source of the Tuffant 18" wheels? I'd love to get the compomotive but savings $1K+ is nice. Alternatively happy to buy a set of compos (5 of) off of someone if they have them!

    Cheers,
    Daniel
