    Ignition issues steering lock 2003 l322 Td6

    Hi All.

Today was the 1st time I have driven the Rangie in a week .
Key in preheat fire up no problems, off I go and pull up half hour later. Hop out, lock door all good. Came back 15 mins later open up hop in put key in ignition and steering column lock makes the usual noise, times 3, and the key wont turn. tried this several times no joy. Tried the remove fuse trick and battery disconnect , no joy.
Pulled steering surround off disconnected wiring plug at lock supplied power to the blue wire and was able to turn key. However the engine would not crank, even with the plug reinserted to the column it would not crank . so I managed to disconnect the steering lock at the right time so the steering wheel was free and went to the statermotor and bridged the solenoid to start the engine and get me home.

SSSOOOOOOO my question is does anyone know what signal is required from the steering column to the engine ecu to engage the crank sequence.
Pin 5 of the steering lock connects to ecu
pin 3 of the steering lock latches the start relay interlock but dont know if other side if relay is fed pos or neg.( this heads to engine control module).

    many thanks. Regards Pas

Does the steering lock click three times then stop and the ignition key not move if so check your battery voltage, the system needs 13.2 volts for it to work. I had the same issue several years ago and went through steering lock removal and ignition switch immobiliser bypass etc. I thought I had sorted it when I removed the steering lock but the problem didn’t go until I changed the battery. I can’t remember who but one of the AULRO members advised me to check battery voltage and if it was down to change the battery. It was and I changed it no more issues.

    Thanks Gippslander.
Battery voltage is not my issue, however I put a charger on and a voltage of 13.7 made no difference. There is a guy on the net from USA who sells these rebuilt units(has some YouTube vids also) he says if it has the 3 click symptom the steering is bad.
Anyway pulled side cover off today and found the round magnet not secured to the plunger.
Managed to muster up a clip and refit, but same fault.
So went for the blue wire at pin number 1 and wired it to the footwell light feed. Now key turns but wont crank. The other pins I bridged were pin 5 and pin 10. Pin 10 has 12v at ign on and pin 5 is a signal wire to the ecu.
I used a 12v 1.2 watt globe just to be safe, key turns and engine starts. Happy days.

    Regards Pas

    Hi there,

Have you tried to pull ignition switch out and check the contacts at end of switch.

I had a similar problem and one contact was stuck and refuse to start.

Saved on not buying another ignition switch.
