    Nearly 20,000 Range Rovers recalled

    If you were fortunate enough to put a 2003-2005 Range Rover in your garage, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is delivering some bad news. According to a just-released recall, a total of 19,168 Range Rover models may have misaligned front driveshafts. If left unchecked, the increased wear on the front splines may cause them to fail... possibly leading to an accident. While this recall isn't exactly explosive in nature, it is an item that should be inspected and/or replaced. As a result, Land Rover will begin contacting owners after January 6, 2009 to schedule appointments for the installation of an updated design, if needed. In the meantime, if your beloved Range Rover is severely vibrating, or making a nasty front-end noise, please go have it checked before something ill happens.

    Summary:
    LAND ROVER IS RECALLING 19,168 MY 2003-2005 RANGE ROVER VEHICLES. THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL COUPLING SLEEVE AND THE PROPELLER SHAFT MAY BE MISALIGNED, RESULTING IN SPLINE WEAR OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. AS THE WEAR BETWEEN THE PROPELLER SHAFT AND THE DIFFERENTIAL SPLINE COUPLING PROGRESSES, NOISE AND VIBRATION ARE EXPECTED.

    Consequence:
    CONTINUED VEHICLE OPERATION CAN EVENTUALLY RESULT IN THE SPLINES SHEARING AND A LOSS OF DRIVE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

    Remedy:
    DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REVISED DESIGN OF THE PROPELLER SHAFT, THE FLANGE KIT AND HEAT SHIELD KIT. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 6, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT LAND ROVER AT 1-313-594-7688.

    This has been active for a while in Australia. The front propshaft is replaced with a conventional "uni at either end" type & the diff flange replaced to match.

    I work as a LR mechanic here in NZ and have doen around 10-15 of these recalls now inclusing my own vehicle. Basically it is removal of the front diff, the pinion flange is pressed out and a new tail shaft bearing is installed, then a new 6 bolted pinion flange in place of the old splined unit.

    A new front prop is installed with a UJ at the diff end, transfer case end is still normal solid 6 bolt mounting to rubber doughnut. A new heatshield is installed to cover UJ from exhaust. Can be done in around 3.5 hours once you have done a few

    It's no great hassle and I have seen a few fail so it's a worthwhile upgrade, in general the L322 with M62 BMW architecture is the most reliable Range Rover imho(although I would say that owning one). Normally the major issues are cooling systems and the odd oil leak but that's about it.

    New vehicles with Ford electrics seem to have more niggles, and some problems with the deisel engines(high pressure pumps etc).

    Hi barrangey and welcome aboard.

    I had 2 front diffs fail on my 2003 RR.

    The first failure gave no indication before it went and left me stranded as the RR cannot be driven once it fails. Luckily I was only 3kms from home.

    The second time it failed, for about 2 or 3 days before, there was an ever increasing squeal from under the bonnet so I drove over to the dealers.

    The mechanic listened to the sound and thought it was an idler arm pulley failing and asked me to leave the RR.

    I home and just walked in the front door as the phone rang and it was the dealer, to tell me that the front diff was about to fail again.

    He had also checked if there was a new diff available and there wasn't so they had to get one from the UK.

    This is something Toyota owners can't get. If Toyota vehicle have a major component fail and there is not one in Australia, it is shipped, literally, sent by ship and usually takes up to 3 months.

    My RR was off the road for 12 day, they flew the new diff out from the UK.

    Can't beat that sort of service.

    Yes we have seen a few stranded by the diff flanges stripping out.... but you are right even parts from UK are normally only a week or two at most.

    L322 Recall - brake lines

    Interesting - I booked my car in for a pre-warranty-expiry check for tomorrow morning and was told they'd need it for a few hours as there's been a recall to replace brake lines (Part number LR075628)
    Anyone else heard of this? Apparently the recall has just been announced, according to Barbagallo Land Rover here in Perth.
    I'm going to extend the warranty anyway, but I wanted to have everything checked over in detail as I'm heading off to Gnaraloo 1,000km north next week, towing a camper trailer.
