The early version of the 4.4's inlet change-over valve was prone to sticking due to dirt build-up around the butterfly mechanism but a sticking turbo actuator isn't a common fault. The valve is between the radiator and the engine on the left side and can be seen from the top without removing anything and therefore easily determined if its the early or later version.
I would ignore the warning not to drive the car if I needed to drive it because the sensors will very quickly detect a fault and the ecm will limit fuel if it thinks fit, although getting restricted performance while overtaking could have nasty repercussions.
