    4.4 TDV8 sticking turbo actuator

    I had an engine warning light come on a few weeks back, swung past the dealer the diagnosed a turbo actuator malfunction, waited 3 weeks for another booking thinking they had order parts, but no, they now tell me it’s a 6-8 week wait as there are no parts in the country..funny thing is that the engine warning light has gone off and the thing is still going like a train..The dealership advised me not to drive it until it’s fixed..anyone had a similar issuea?

    The early version of the 4.4's inlet change-over valve was prone to sticking due to dirt build-up around the butterfly mechanism but a sticking turbo actuator isn't a common fault. The valve is between the radiator and the engine on the left side and can be seen from the top without removing anything and therefore easily determined if its the early or later version.

    I would ignore the warning not to drive the car if I needed to drive it because the sensors will very quickly detect a fault and the ecm will limit fuel if it thinks fit, although getting restricted performance while overtaking could have nasty repercussions.

    Thanks Mate, its a 2017 so I would guess its the later one, Im going to keep driving at as its a bit unrealistic given the wait time for parts.

    Ah, I assumed L322 obviously ignoring the L405 section.

    Does your vehicle have the oil sensor extension loom fitted? Oil migrates along the wiring from the oil sensor in the sump to the electronics in the primary turbo that then requires a new turbo. LR has produced a loom to stop the migration and is slowly retrofitting the loom to the 4.4 in all L405 & L494s under program code N375. The loom only takes a few minutes to fit. You might want to check with your dealer that the loom will be fitted if not already fitted. The loom is easily spotted on the right side of the sump when the engine undertray is removed.

    Resurrecting this thread.

    Friend has engine fault when towing with his TDV8. Only when towing 2.5tonne plus and when accelerating hard i.e. to overtake. Car goes into limp mode and needs restarting.

    Has been in warranty and back to main dealer who can’t replicate fault they reckon.

    I don’t know codes. Sounds like this turbo actuator fault?

    Here’s a screenshot of a video showing the fault coming on. High revs under acceleration.

    Knowing the fault codes could be helpful.

    What year model? IIRC the 4 short tubes connecting the air intake to the manifolds weren't updated until MY14, with earlier versions splitting often out of sight. Remove the engine cover then look for oil residue around any of the 4 hoses. If one is split then replace all 4 with 70mm ID x 55mm long silicone hose, even re-using the original clamps.

    Apologies MY15. Dealer serviced always.


    Has been back to the workshop on at least six occasions and other than trying to clear and clean the turbo actuator hasn’t fully resolved the issue.

    Mine is a MY17..still waiting for parts. I had a similar issue with my 2011 3.6 V8, would go into limp under hard acceleration or when towing, dealer couldn't replicate it, I pulled it apart myself and found the intercooler hose with a split, couldn't see it but I knew it was boost related, replaced with aftermarket silicone hose and had no issues for another 100k when I sold it..

    where did u get the aftermarket silicone hose from?

    Any chance he can get hold of all the ECM fault codes? Might not be so easy from a dealer though.
