Looking at buying a D5, what add ons are good and what are not so good

As title says and having owned my D2 for nearly 20 years will keep it for a cape York trip though.

What is good will get the good sound system like it loud and clear with the thump of a sub, is the powered tail gate good? Was thinking of glass roof and will be towing and want the locking rear diff.

so anyone that has spent the cash and used the extras, does the centre cooler work as I like a cold drink mid trip, active cruise control? I do like the 360 cameras had one on a hire car worked a treat.

I’ve just pick up a slightly used D5 SD4 SE.

It has a lot of options I normally wouldn’t bother with but these are my thoughts.

    options

    Morzine Headlining-Ebony
I haven’t even figured out what this one is.

    20" 5 Split-Spoke S5011
Probably gives better tyre options than the 19”

    7 Seat Pack (Leather)
With the 3rd row seating there isn’t actually much storage room if your looking to carry any tools etc. I’ll probably remove these and will then pick up a lot of underfloor storage

    360o Park Distance Control
    Very Handy.

    Electric Sunroof-Fix Rr Glass
I normally would bother down here in Tasi but its rather nice. There will be very little clearance if any between the open top and anything on a roof rack.

    2nd Row-2x USB Charge Points
    Maybe if you have kids

    Full Length Silver Roof Rails
    For me an essential.

    Advanced Tow Assist
My trailer has LED lights hence its not being detected. I have to add loading resistors and then it should work. For me its not essential, but with a caravan or large boat it would be a different matter.

    Tyre Pressure Monitoring Sys
Not an expensive option and worth having.

    Keyless Entry
Very handy and really should be standard.

    Power Gesture Tailgate
An expensive option that I probably wouldn’t bother with as the manual tailgate is easy enough to use. I’m still battling with the gesture operation.

    Capability Plus Pack
One of the options I was after.

    Surround Camera System
Around the city I normally leave it off, but if picking your way along bush tracts the front camera will be very handy.

    Wood Finisher-NatShadowOakVnr
    What a waste of money.

What else would have been nice.

·Auto High Bean Assist. This would be good for highway driving.

·Active Cruse Control would be nice.

For normal use the SD4 has plenty of power, for heavy towing the TD6 would be nice.

The only minor issue is price, the initial cost of my options would have been an additional 1/3 over the base SE SD4

    D2a (Sold)
    MY17 D5 SD4 SE (Sold)
MY19 D5 SD4 SE (with all the options I want)

    D5 hse

I have had my td6 hse discovery 5 for about 11 months and love it. I found that this model was the best value for money if your looking for newer tech. Nothing wrong with se, but by the time I added the things I wanted, plus the extra hidden storage areas that you can't get on se, it was worth it. Adaptive cruise is good and bad. I regularly have to cancel the cruise when on Hunter express way between Tamworth and Newcastle otherwise you never overtake. But other times with road works and changing speed zones the adaptive cruise helps. Also have tyre pressure sensors and with the cost of 20inch tyres, good to know what they are doing. 360 degree sensors are essential, just helps place the car so much easier. Heated and cooled seats, if you've never had them, trust me worth it. Have third row seats, no family planned at this stage, but at a wedding made it easier to take family. I'm 6'4 and fit in third row easy. Plus the possibilities of resale one day makes it a must I feel. Did not get them powered though, only major difference is you need some weight over time to push the seats flush, otherwise sit up out of their recess a little. Activity key was a little thing I didn't think was necessary but once you have it you use it for everything. Sunroof is a personal choice, on the range rover sport I'm ordering it makes sense, but with the windscreen rake, the sunroof is almost behind you. The only thing I would do is have a colour on the car. Was impatient and got a fuji white colour. Really no matter what you get, it is the best car, short of range rover sport, which is another level. Sd4 is a good motor, slight hesitation when pulling away while the computer makes its mind up. As soon as you drive td6, you won't want the Sd4 haha. Make sure you get service plan, well worth it. I guess the biggest thing between Sd4 and td6 is that there is an oil dilution sensor in td6, this sets the service intervals, no matter what kms or date. So more city driving will cause earlier servicing. No matter for me, serviced discovery sport every 6 months at least. But could make the difference for you as these interim oil changes are not covered by service plan. I don't think that sd4 is subject to this same issue.

    Stevo!

    I've just picked up a SD4 HSE.

    Options on my car are:
    # HUD - Very good
    # TFT display (standard on HSE) is excellent.
    # DAB (standard on HSE) is very good.
    # Roof rails - A must and don't be ripped off but the dealer asking 3k. I got mine for $600.
    # Drive pro pack - Adaptive cruise, lane keeping etc. The cruise is good and the pack is a must for resale me thinks.
    # Heated/cooled seats - It works. Came with the car and I would never have paid for it.
    # 7 seat - As above.
    # Solar attenuated windscreen - If it stops me having to have skin cancers burnt off my hands it'll be worth it.
    # TPMS - Worth it me thinks
    # 380w Merdian (standard on HSE) is great. The 800w option (HSE and above) would be fantastic.

Re the 7 seats. Storage for tools, etc in the rear is non-existent. The 5 seater has a handy storage well where the 3rd row would normally go.

Powered tail gate is standard in the HSE. Yes it works well but I would not pay money for it.

If you buy now you'll get 5 years sevicing and 5 year factory warranty.

    Cheers.

Cheers for the replies, the roof rack option might be the go for me too $600 vs $3000 bloody hell they know how to charge and will have a bloody good mark up on the price too. was thinking HSE I think and will be keeping it for a while maybe another 20 years by that time we will not be allowed to drive ourselves around by then, will make up a list and see what I can get. 20" wheels was on my list going to take the 4 and the 6 for a spin soon.

If I ever win Lotto would go for super charged range rover as like the sound of the V8 and when I lived in Brissy lived on a hill and had 2 that would go up pass my house sounded good.

    D5 td6

The price you pay for buying the first model out. Shame I missed the tft and dab standard let alone tft option for my hse as one of the first. Might have held off knowing that. If possible take a terrain response 2 optioned car for a drive. On the drive experience it was definitely noticeable both on and off road driving my car and it back to back. Agree with the gesture tail gate option. The beauty and the peril of these cars is you can go nuts with options, basically on what you think would be good to have. I have built about 3 discovery's since my18 update and if money no object would have capability pack, sunroof, hse in farallon black with climate seats, but no third row. If your going to keep it for 20 years then that little bit extra now will be soaked up over years owned. I swap every 3 years at the latest and like Gucci tech stuff like tft, hence also options bought are sometimes considered purely for resale. Iike I said, you can go nuts and build a 'cheap' range rover. Dynamically this car won't be like a range rover sport on road. Having said that by the time you have optioned up your disco possibly look at what range rover sports are going to be.

And the other thing is 'buy once, cry once.' found this out the hard way by not waiting for an order with discovery and trying to make up with the range rover sport. Not sure if I would be trading my sport for the upgrade so soon if I took my time on the discovery

The only thing I miss on my HSE Lux was not ticking the 4 zone air con unit.
you would expect it to be standard in their top spec model, but wasn’t and it really needs it if
you carry passengers in the 2nd or 3rd row seats.

my favorite gadget ( which surprises me even ) is the auto opening tailgate and drop down seat section, it can be opened from the drivers seat, the rear tailgate button , key fob or the foot gesture. The foot gesture is a pain, but the others all work well if you are in and out of the rear,
    which with kids were are.

Well went and had a look at the Discovery took the V6 for spin, gees I think after driving my Td 5 for so long I would be getting the odd speed ticket, could not go on the highway but drove around the concord area.

The sale rep was in the back said go over the round abouts so I did and floored it on the exits seems to corner well and soaks up the bumps as well.

now I wonder how well the V8 supercharged range rovers go? Definitely would be racking up demerit points if I had one of those.
