Restricted Performance - alarm on centre dash

This has happened to us around 5 times in the last couple of months.

Not sure what has caused this, but, the only thing I can "boil" this down to is we were towing the c.van @ the time, on cruise control. ??
One time on a hill, especially when a road train is up yr clacker, hairy moment.
    Other times on the flat.

CC is usually set at 98 - 100kph, which is the limit here in WA.

    Vehicle not fitted with ACC.

Now before everyone comments, that I should not be towing with CC, bear in mind I have been doing this
for approx. 10 years &, so far, this is the only vehicle that has decided it does not like it(if this is the cause). ???

We have been able to overcome this by, pulling over(no other option, especially @ 60kph) switching off, unbuckle seat belts, lock car, wait & then restart.
    In other words, reboot.

    Any ideas or thoughts. ???

    Cheers Tom

    Tom,
This was a common occurrence in the D4, ( did it on my first D4 3 litre ) happened to a lot of others too, only while towing and on cruise control, funny how it’s reappeared again years later in the D5.

it was a simple software update and never did it again.

until you get it fixed, don’t tow and use the cruise control,

    cheers

    Hi Jack.

will take it into the Dealer & see what his computer says. ???

understand the, throttle body of these D5's, in some cases, are unable to take the towing load and, thus, go into this
    type of, Limp Mode. ???

    will advise.

    Cheers Tom

I have no idea if this effects a D5, but a number of D4s have various problems, usually Limp Home Mode, when things like electric brakes are earthed on the NEGATIVE ( - ) TERMINAL on the cranking battery.

Nothing other than the cranking battery's earth cable should be connected to that terminal.

    Just a suggestion!

the problem sounds identical to the D4 software update, while towing and using the cruise control, it would come up with a fault light and power dropped away pretty quickly, happened on a Christmas camping trip from Perth to Esperance within the first 200km, was pretty disappointed but LR assist instructed a couple of resets and we where on our way, worked it out myself that if was cruise control related over the next few hours of driving, we were only towing a small Jayco camper too, now days we tow a 3.5 ton full van with our old D4 and new D5 and it hasn’t happened again, but I don’t think I have used cruise control and towing in the D5 yet, but will try one day.

If if you search the D4 forum you will no doubt it happened to dozens D4’s off memory.

i will ask the dealer next time I’m in for a oil change....if the towing/cruise control issue has returned again in the D5

With the 3.0 D4 it was a programming bug, getting through some logic to a point that should never have been reached which terminated in producing the particular fault code. Not using CC when towing avoided the particular set of conditions.
