Android Auto / Apple CarPlay in Disco 5

Hi - I'm brand new to disco ownership..... my Disco 5 has been ordered (pretty excited!), but have just been told that I can't order the Android Auto/CarPlay option on the MY19 model. Just wondering if anyone has been told anything different? Or if you can confirm that we can upgrade later via OTA update?

I had thought (but don't know) that it comes with the next software update. There's something about this on the UK forum I think.

I heard that it was free for a while but LR have started charging for this now, at least in the UK. It is part of the "Smartphone pack" add-on. It is separate from the infotainment system although I believe you'd need to be on Phase 4 of the software to be able to have the Smartphone pack installed.

My car came with the original 4 tile screen (old software) and I asked the dealer to upgrade it due to bluetooth connectivity issues. The old software is full of bugs, bluetooth connectivity only being one. They upgraded the system to version 18D (latest at present) then also installed the Smartphone pack as I reported bluetooth connectivity issues. On the invoice this showed as "discount" and they did not charge anything. To use ACP or AA you need a fixed connection to the USB port from your phone so it might be a way to alleviate reported bluetooth issues. Either way, I'm happy that they installed it although have found that at times the phone is connected but ACP is not available. Having said that, I used a standard apple cable which is a bit on the long side and got trapped when I closed the cubby fridge lid. I'll change it for a 10cm short one from JB Hifi later today, see if that cures it.

    Thanks Ron,

Yeah - the cost was going to be bout $350 for the smartphone pack I think, but then they said that it wasn't avaliable yet?

So just confirming - you are saying you were able to upgrade to the smartphone pack in Oz? Strange that my dealer is saying it's not possible? Maybe I just have to upgrade later?

    Cheers

Yes absolutely, this is available in AU. I have it installed on my MY18 TD6 SE (no rear seat entertainment). I am now on version 18D of the infotainment system with the smart pack add-on.

By the way, I purchased a "Cygnett Source Lightning to USB Cable 10cm" from JB Hifi but strangely ACP does not work with this cable. Swapped back to the Apple cable and it worked fine, swapped back to the Cygnett cable and it didn't work.

I mentioned above that at times the car doesn't see the CarPlay device even though the phone is connected and phone calls work. It seems that at times when connecting the phone to the car, some box pops up on the phone saying "unlock to connect to accessory". When you unlock the phone, CarPlay suddenly starts working. This is a little strange as the phone knows about the CarPlay device so I would have thought it should connect every time automatically.

One more thing I noticed, when the passenger decides it is time to charge their phone and unplugs CarPlay. The phone connects again via Bluetooth but for some reason my iPhone would not direct sound to the car via Bluetooth.

I've figured that out now, it seems that an iPhone will happily direct sound to another device provided that the a WIFI network on the phone is the same as the WIFI network definition in the car. And on the day my car went in for a service, I set up my shiny new Telstra WIFI router and changed the home network name. It seems that the iPhone uses a common WIFI network definition to validate, as on the iPhone the new network did not match the old one in the car. I changed the WIFI network in the car, and now "Land Rover" shows up as a device to direct sound output to via bluetooth to on the iPhone. I'm on iOS12.

I find if you use a genuine Apple lead it always works......use an aftermarket lead and it can be hit and miss.

I do use a genuine Apple cable, tried a sort 10cm cable once but what a waste of money that was - CarPlay wouldn't work with it at all.
