Not waiting 5 years to change oils

After one year of ownership and been in for its 1st service, decided to change the diff oils and transfer case oil, auto trans and filter next year once I figure out how, dealer only changes these oils after 5 years.

have taken oil samples (did one earlier on front diff and engine) and will test all oils again after another 10K to see if metal readings drop off.

From left to right, rear diff, transfer case and front diff.

Also so note the hose found this at the front of stone guard, it has come off the air recirc valve for turbo just waiting for it to cool down so I can find it, none in stock and a three week wait for the part. But who knows where it was sitting and where the valve is not sure how it made it there.

if it is off the car will put a silicone hose on for the mean time.

    oil samples are back

ok the oilo samples are back from lab and have had some spare time to down load onto site.

Also the hose I found, I checked to see if it was missing off the valve and no it was still there so only guess it happened when getting built.

About $35 dollars, I bought a kit from Castrol but get it for a 3rd of the cost that public gets it for, Repco did sell oil sample bottles and have used them years ago.

will be a good way too see if the engine oil change periods are to far apart etc, will update when I have done 10K kms.

The really high PQ index on the front and to a lesser extent t/case are a worry.

That means lots of iron, born out by the really high Fe number.

The PQ index is a really good thing to watch for, it'll indicate a failure even if the Fe number is low, basically a high PQ with low Fe means the chunks are too large to detect in a normal particulate test

Id like to see a virgin test on the oil, the Si mightn't be too bad as it's used as an anti-foamant.
Si in combination with a few other things will be more indicative of dirt contamnination

I agree with Rick's comments. Typically anything over 10micron in size wont show up in the element analysis as its too big. As Rick mentioned FE and PQ are good to trend together. I'd be interested to see how that rear diff comes out after that first oil change as the result dosent look all that flash. What type of transfer case does the D5 use? Is the front and rear diff oil specs different?

The front and rear diffs use the same oil unless it is fitted with the "E" diff then different type, some of the heavy machinery we have on the job all the oils get changed after 50 hours and oil samples tend to be a bit ****, once oils are changed and samples done at the next service oil samples tend to come good so expect the same for the Discovery, at the start everything beds in so the initial readings will be high but if the oil is not changed all that crap speeds up the wear and makes it worse.

I have only done this as an exercise as being a mechanic do not like leaving oil unchanged on new components, oil technology has improved over the years so can last longer it is just finding right balance and the diffs do not hold much oil.

Has anyone done the transmission filter and oil change yet on the D5 I can only presume it is the same as D3 & 4.

Fe will always be high on the initial oil fill as the CWP break in, but I wouldn't expect the PQ Index to be so up there either.
The tiny volume of oil doesn't help, either.

    Another round of oil samples

Have done next lot of oil samples, need to check breathers on diffs and transfer case, check intake on engine for proper sealing.

Still seeing PQ in the engine, and the iron level is still up a little. Compared to my 2.7TD they are both elevated - I don't see any PQ numbers and my iron levels are lower. Silicon levels are about where I would expect and Aluminium is up a little so I wouldn't be convinced its totally a dirt contamination issue there.
Front diff still shedding plenty of iron with PQ and iron (PQ is more a concern to me over the actual iron levels). Chromium levels are high and will only be coming from bearings in the diff. Dirt contamination is a possibility in the oil here.
Rear diff seems to have settled down a little, however PQ still up. Silicon on its own I'd be saying is more of a sealant leaching into the oil over dirt.
Transfer case - again iron and PQ, iron not so much an issue there but PQ still being up is a concern to me. Dirt contamination defiantly a possibility.
