    Restricted performance

    Hi all.

    Recently my MY18 SD4 HSE has been playing up. At random times it loses 95% of the throttle response and the engine is noticeably noisier (like an old tech diesel). It can happen from a standing start or while driving. From a standing start with my foot flat to the floor, it creeps away and can take say 10-15 seconds to hit 10 kph and then slowly accelerates after that; holds gears too long, noisy. Comes and goes.

    I had it in for a "diagnostic" last week with the result being NFF.

    This morning after a run down the M1 and back it went into "restricted performance" mode which then cleared, and then occurred again. Luckily we were back in our street again. During "restricted performance" mode the car performed as previous described. LR roadside assist say it has to be towed to a dealer.

    Any ideas?

    So......after a week at the dealer the fault was diagnosed as "Checked vacuum hoses and found vacuum hose from solenoid to variable vane turbo actuator hose had come adrift partially and is allowing vacuum pressure to be lost. Refit vacuum hose properly and cleared all fault."

    Picked it up this morning and the same issue occurred from start up. Didn't get out of the driveway. No service Dept on a Sat morning so I was left with the sales manager who was suitably mortified. So back to the Golf (the car, not the game) for some more very cramped motoring.

    Hope You didn't pay to have the fault diagnosed. Cos they obviously didn't.

    Since the last update the D5 is still in the shop. Thus far it was the air filter, then the fuel filter, then a collection of hoses and now apparently it's the secondary (?) turbo. That part is coming from the UK so 3 weeks with no car and no doubt quite a few more to come.

    Sorry to hear that, fingers crossed they are getting to the bottom of it now. Shouldn't you get a loan car as yours is still under warranty?

    Originally I was offered a loan car for 5 days which I didn't take as I had access to another car and didn't want the hassle of picking up the loaner only to have to take it back a day later when the D5 was fixed. I have now asked for a long term loaner which is doable but LRA have to approve it as it comes from (I think) a third party.

    Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s what mine did result engine replaced (long engine). Happened when travelling at Christmas time went into restricted performance twice, towed to dealer had car for over a week the result NFF. After returned still had restricted performance alerts and what I call going into “ Perkins diesel mode “ taken to local dealer and after some investigation they found excessive blowby and Land Rover said to install a new long motor. COVID hit just after I got the car back so I have not been able to do many Kms but cars is performing normally.
    I didn’t get a real explanation of what went wrong (which was disappointing), I don’t think the dealer pulled down the motor but may have been returned to Land Rover to check out.
    Another interesting thing that occurred at the same time was a fuel stain around the fuel filler which I think came from vent near filler. I not sure of the connection, maybe the tank was pressurised somehow, it hasn’t happened since and wasn’t happening before.
    The car has done 40,000 Kms.

    Symptoms I gave to Land Rover
    A number of restricted performance alerts.
    Increased turbo lag
    Goes into “ Perkins diesel mode “ high induction noise and sound like old indirect injection diesel tractor. Usually occurs when stopped at intersection or slowing down in traffic , clears with restart.
    Sometimes when 1st started stalls when put into gear.

    I mean this in the nicest possible way but......................I hate you!

    What you've described is exactly what I've encountered. I haven't had the pleasure of driving a Perkins powered anything and now I don't want to.

    Was yours the SD4?

    I have interrogated the dealer today who assure me (not that I'm assured) that it is in fact a turbo although I'm not sure which one. 4 weeks transit from the UK which is optimistic I think given the deliveries I'm getting out of the US and EU at the mo for work purchases.

    To be as fair as I can be, this is the first time I've had a Disco off the road since I started driving the D3 in 2007 so I suppose I've had a good run.

    I'm stilled ****ed off though.

    It’s the same as yours 2018 HSE SD4, strangely mines still has original turbo etc. Anyhow good luck with yours.

    So....7 weeks in and the D5 is still in the shop. Turbo replaced but there are apparantely, "responsiveness gremlins" ongoing.

    I quite like the Disco sport loaner but I want my bloody car back!
