Hi, I am looking to fit a standard UHF aerial some where on my L405, finding it difficult to come up with a neat solution. Would appreciate any advice when you finish yours.
I am preparing my 2016 RRS SDV8 for a club trip to the Victorian high country tracks around Mansfield & Mt Buller areas very soon.
I wish to install a Uniden AT870 477MHz Elevated Feed Antenna to the front bumper or an alternative position off a bonnet hinge mounted Z bracket.
I am seeking advice on this CB Radio installation as I cannot locate a suitable firewall grommet to feed a cable from the passenger compartment to the engine bay.
All comments and advice are welcome.
Cheers, Steve

I'd recommend buying a set of Rhino cross bars and mounting the aerial to the rear drivers side "foot". ie I leave the cross bars off the car (take off 3 of the 4 feet that screw into the roof) unless I need them - but leave one foot (rear most) in place with a rhino antenna/aerial holders attached to the foot. The whole things sits nice and low (with a small stub aerial screwed on - or lower if you leave that in your door pocket until you need it!).
My UHF is wired into a second battery in the boot floor (l322) but you can ofcourse mount a 2nd battery in the rear boot, drivers side of a L405 (see separate thread). Run the cable up the rear windscreen to aerial. I left the UHF unit itself in rear side (boot) compartment close to the 2nd battery (next to fuse box) and ran the microphone all the way to the dashboard (as all the buttons are on the microphone - "remote head" - on latest Uniden UHF's.
cheers

Thanks Chris,
That sounds like the way to go, I guess you dont need the whip that high the stub should do the job. I already have the aux battery in the left side it was a good solution. ( the main battery is also in the boot in this model, under the spare !!).

I ran my antenna lead from the front bumper (where the antenna is mounted) through the engine bay (driver side) and into the driver footwell. There's a rubber grommet that's part of the steering column boot where you can safely make a hole to run it through. I mounted the head under the steering column (after running both ign-switched and permanent live feeds from the rear fuse box).

Hi,
I just have been looking at options for our 2015 RRS... in the end we went with an on glass one... it will met our needs (mainly for talking to vehicles in the immediate vicinity)...
The other option was to get a custom mount built out front through the grille... as I didn’t want a roof rack or pod (I ripped off the cross rails on the d3 once)... but the quotes were crazy...
So $120 for a new antenna... and a self install... all done.
Cheers,
Ap
G'day Ap & Andrew. I've just purchased a 2017 L494 RRS which has the infra-red shielding windscreen and am keen to install a glass mount UHF areal for very occasional local convoy chat. Did your exercise work out successfully and are you able to get reasonable range??
Thanks in anticipation.
Cheers, Peter
I have the glass antenna and it’s been perfect.
