    Driving lights

My new RRS should be arriving in Sept, but one query I do have is whether the high beam is better than than that on the D4 (certainly on my MY10 model). On the D4 it was like they were pointing to the sky rather than down the road. There have been a few threads about it in the Disco section.

I do a bit of country driving and installed a set of driving lights on the D4 using the factory mounts. As the RRS does not have a bull bar available (not that I can find), and factory driving lights are not an option, has anyone fitted them to their L494? If so, how did you go about mounting them?

    Thanks

    LED light bar on L494

Take a look at Gordon's at GOE website (Facebook page) as he has a photo of his new L494 with a LED light bar (combined flood spot) on the bumper bar of his car. Might be worth sking him re fitment etc
    cheers

    Cameron,

A friend of mine had some Lightforce driving lights fitted to his 2014 RRS by Peter Snieg (on this forum) at MLR in Melbourne. Peter used new number plate holder that comes with a small bar on top to mount lights (cant remember make but available from ARB and goes where original numberplate was. He had to reinforce behind the plate and plastic bumper. It all turned out really well and survived our Simpson Desert and Hay River trip last year.

The RRS Xenon lights are excellent for wide vision but not great at long distance penetration. Nowhere near as good as my 2008 RRS Xenons. As far as I know LED bars are also good for wide vision buthaven't got much long distance penetration. I may be wrong on that though.

Thanks for that, will drop Sniegy a note.

Have tried a led light bar on the D4 but the penetration was not great, although got good lighting of the roadside. Am currently running ARB led spotlights which are quite good for penetration. Am thinking about Fyrlyt 24v lights next.

Can't go wrong with the Fyrlyts.
Light bars are good for close range flood on tracks I agree. LED's are no good for distance, especially if there is any moisture , smoke or dust in the air. Blue light, from LED's doesn't travel as far as red. Google it. It's an interesting read. Colour definition is also shocking with LED. Everything is grey. It's the colour of the light that is wrong. Harder to pick out wildlife like Roos with LED also.
Halogen is far superior for penetration and ease on the eyes as well as giving better contrast.
I drive the long way home at night just so I can use mine.
Best thing I've put on my Disco.

Hey Todd...can you PM your work contact details, I need to purchase another set for a work car. We seem to be over the issue of lenses cracking.

This will be our 4th set and the boys seem happy with them.

Most of the cheaper LED bars on the market fade at around 250m.

However, the up-market, newer LED bars use a different transistor design and reflector optics (eg Lazer, Rigid SR2 etc) and can project up to 1300+m at 1Lux. The one on my L494 gives about 3 lux at 500m, comparable to most HIDs, but still incorporates a spread pattern as well. It's more than twice the price though

Of course, there's more to good lights than a beam pattern, but the low profile of the bar I got was perfect for where I wanted to mount it. It certainly lights up the track when driving at speed at night!

    Cheers,

    Gordon

Gordon, how have you mounted the light? Is there an where behind the grill to secure brackets, or are they mounted to the bumper?

    Cheers
