    Restricted Performance Triangle

    Hello to fellow L494 owners. I have a new problem that has popped up - an orange triangle "Restricted Performance". We have a late 2015 RR Sport HSE SDV6 and it has worked well until now. I have looked at different threads here and elsewhere, but there seems to be very little info specific to the L494. We think it started a few days ago after an internal light was left on for 2 days. It started fine and ran fine, then we filled up the tank with diesel and on driving off from the staton the triangle came on. And yes it kills performance totally! Snail like acceleration. So we stopped at the shops, came back to the car (with groceries) and drove off - no issues. Today my wife drives off to an appointment, and calls me along the way - its back!
    I put in a call to our Land Rover dealer who says they can't look at it for over 2 weeks! . It has 42k on the clock, was last serviced with 26k on the clock, has never been off-road and is totally stock.

    Does anyone have any experience with this? Would a new battery fix it? Or could it be a more sinister issue lurking somewhere?

    You could remove the engine cover to check for oil weeping from the back of the throttle body which can come adrift from its rear section or from one of the plastic inlet manifolds but as there are several possible causes including a split inlet hose or a sticking secondary turbo inlet isolation valve, a proper investigation is really required.

    Throw a charger on it...

    All those short drives aren’t your friend!
    And a battery loves a good TLC charge each month.

    Was that a service station? Perhaps the new fuel was dirty which has mostly blocked the fuel filter.

    Hi guys, thank you for the responses.

    My wife who is the primary driver of this car, was incensed enough to ring the dealership and ask for the manager. This got their attention, and the upshot is we took it in this afternoon and left it there overnight for them to check in the morning. Seems there was a spot available after all!

    I like the idea of the battery being put on a charger as I have one in the shed somewhere, and the battery is 3.5 years old. It did go for a 30km run this arvo. The light came on on the outbound journey, but not the home bound journey. We thought maybe its working ok, so attempted a longer drive. It came back on after 10 minutes. Pulled over, switched off, waited 10 minutes (during which time we called the dealer!), switched back on. Drove home to get the other car. Was good for 5 minutes, then back on, so definitely a problem. Maybe the fuel? We have used the same servo for years and never had a problem before. The battery? Can't think why, as it starts just fine. Perhaps the tranny? It changes gears smoothly. It just has no acceleration when the light is on. When the light is off it feels normal.

    However, I'm sure we will get a call on Friday sometime to tell us the good/bad/ugly news, I'll happily share when I know.

    Anyone have any experience with out of warranty claims? (5 months past). If its a simple thing i.e. battery/sensor or something kind of affordable, I'll wear it. If they say that at 42,000km your tranny has blown up or your turbos have spooled out permanently, then it'll be off to the courts I go. Any suggestions in this department will be helpful.

    Restricted Performance is imposed by grossly limiting fuel when fuel or airflow inconsistencies exist as detected by engine sensors but nothing to do with the gearbox.

    I wouldn’t worry just yet.

    Do the battery charge, check the terminals are tight.
    (And earth to the body earth NOT the battery earth).

    Even when they start ok, if the battery is low (or on its way out) it’s a real trouble maker.

    It’s the cheap test!


    Then look at a fuel filter change - as it happened after fuelling it may be as mentioned, a bit of dirty fuel.

    Yep the battery in our Mazda 2 is on the way out and frequently triggers a warning, but not restricted performance so far, but recovers after a decent drive. Due for a service when will be replaced.
    So give yours several good charges and see what happens. At worst, you will have eliminated that as a cause.

    Also might just be a dirty MAP sensor too... which is really easy to sort out.

    I’ve just had this warning, and it was the fuel filter being too clogged, hence restricting performance.
