    Head Unit Upgrade

    Hi all,

Did a search and couldn't find anything.

Has anyone upgraded their head unit to Apple car play / Android?

    Cheers, Craig

Gentlemen, firstly my apologies to the OP.
    Please bear with the noob...

What is wrong with the ( I'm guessing-) standard unit?
Are people replacing the headunits from the "better" systems ?

There are 3 different levels? yes? and the number of speakers gives this away?
or visual differences without it being switched on? (looking through the drivers window type thing)

    Thanks...

The original head unit does not have apple carplay or the android equivilant if that is important to you, also the navigation is less than optimal as well, as would be expected with a unit that was probably designed around 2012. After living with my unit I have found the bluetooth streaming works well enough for me and the only real change I have had to make is to use the somewhat clunky phone interface to use the phonebook to make calls rather than pressing a button and using Siri as I do in my other vehicles.

There are three levels of stereo system in the RRS, a poverty pack 8? speaker unit which is not up to the standards I would expect, a 800watt Meridian unit and a 1700watt meridian unit, either of the Meridian units are OK, for me anyway and the 1700 watt unit was a 10K option so there are not that many around.

To complicate the issue further there are a pile of additional options that fit either of the meridian units:
    DAB radio
    TV Tuner
Headrest video screens in 2 sizes
There is also a two way viewable front screen but I would assume that that is a different version of the head unit.
I think apart from the two way screen all the head units are the same but I may be wrong on this front.

When I was looking for my car I decided that I wanted meridian sound- easily found on carsales by the little badges on the speakers.
After 2017 there was a significant entertainment unit upgrade as well but the trade off is that adblue came in at the same time if you are looking at a diesel which takes up 20 litres of what was formerly fuel capacity.

    Regards,
    Tote

Tote has got it pretty much covered but I would add; the "head unit" upgrade does not replace what is there but rather leaves it intact and intercepts it while adding improved functionality. These upgrades are not really about the sound system but rather enhancing features and functionality. It is kind of crap when your nav system is out of date by years and years and has virtually no features that assist with traffic flow monitoring etc because LR refuse to pay the local company the licencing fee to enable it in their vehicles for Australia. With all the road work that has happened over the last couple of years it's become quite useless and buying an out of date map update gets you a good way along the purchase of Cambo's solution and some of the way on the exy 10.5" android unit.

Cambo's solution adds Apple Car Play and Android Auto using the existing screen in the car by intercepting some harnesses at the back of the screen. The one I posted about actually replaces the screen with what is an android tablet with custom software and a larger screen while utilising some of the original screens electronics. The harnesses get plugged into the original transferred board allowing the unit to provide access to the full original functionality while providing a large 10.5" screen and a stack more functionality placing it on par with the newer cars.

Audio upgrades can be done by upgrading the amp under the passenger front seat and adding/replacing the speakers. I thought there were 4 system levels; base level crap one 8 speakers, 400w 11 sp. Meridian, 825W 19sp. Meridian and 1700w 23sp. Meridian. There are people who have done these audio upgrades. The harnesses seem to be the hardest part. I believe you need to also update the CCF to let the car know it has a different system.

Sorry, that was quite a bit of blah blah blah.
    Cheers,

    Sean
