    Can't decide on wheel/tyre size?

    Hi All,

After much deliberation I'm about to bite the bullet and purchase some 20" wheels for my RRS. I'm downgrading from 22" as I'm wanting to put all-terrain tyres on for some general beach and off-road use.

I've decided on ROH Blade wheels with Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tyres.

I've been given two configuration options:

    a) ROH 20x10 with Nitto 285/50*20
    b) ROH 20x8.5 with Nitto 275/55*20

Anyone able to recommend one size over the other?
My only concern is the sidewall difference. Was originally going with the 275/55 but the rep recommend I go with the wider wheel and 285/50.

Any help in finalising my decision is greatly appreciated.

    I have a set of 275 55 20 Nitto Ridge Grapplers on my MY19 D5.

    Very happy with them.

Was tossing up the 285's but wanted to keep width tolerances & the extra height of side wall.

Believe it or not have improved ride both on & off road.
    Cheers

I would go for 275/55, which will give extra cm of sidewall over 285/50. Also those who have 275/55 report that the spare will fit in the hole in the boot ok. 285/50 may be a little too wide for the boot floor to sit flat?
I currently have 255/55 and will go to 275/55 when the current tyres wear out.

On any vehicle , increased sidewall height, ie aspect ratio increase , will give you better ride quality in all applications.

I have decided to go with the 275/55 as i really want the extra sidewall but mounted on the 20*10 wheel.
I have been told that running the 275/55 on the 20*8.5 wheel will cause the tyre to balloon when airing down.

Apparently the 20*10 will sit better also on the car (as the 8.5 is too narrow) and no rubbing either.

Here's hoping all goes well. As almost all dealers are telling me to get the 285/50 tyre.
I trust the guys on this forum more though ;-)

Just need to confirm that the 20*10 will allow the floor to close flat when the spare wheel is in place?

I would not like to fit my 275/55R20 AT+ currently on 8.5" standard rims to 10" rims because the sidewalls would be stretched to make them more vulnerable to damage. Any bulging when aired-down would be less on 8.5" rims than on 10". I really think that you've made the wrong choice of 275/55 on 10".

Thanks for this info. I have been researching all day whether the 275/55 will fit on 10" wide wheels and have found that the side walls will stretch. I haven't confirmed my purchase yet and called the dealer to confirm this info with him and he assures me they are fine. Not sure if it's to do with the ROH wheel design?
I may just revert to 8.5" and leave it at that. Price is exactly the same. He and other dealers have said that the wheels will sit a little inside and won't look as good as the 10".

I have found them to be good.

Little bit more noise than OEM tyres but you have to be listening for it with radio off.

    Much better ride though
    Cheers

Keep in mind that LT tyres have a stronger / stiffer sidewall, so you can actually get a harsher ride downsizing tyre diameter.

Likewise, some tyres (non LT) have a stronger sidewall than others.

    Such a hard choice...........

    Cheers, Craig
