Secondary turbo failure - is this common

    Hi all

2014 Sport with the 4.4l SDV8 with 120,000km is currently sitting at Landrover in Newstead Brisbane in pieces due to a stuffed secondary turbo. The mechanics discovered excess oil in the inlet manifold and exhaust system.

    Has anyone heard of this?

I had posted a thread in the technical area but should have posted here.

Landrover want to charge $7k for a new turbo and $8k for a new DPF!

I have since found a place at Acacia Ridge that cleans DPF, so that has saved some money.

This is one expensive car when broken....

About the only common turbo-related problem on the SDV8 that I've read about is oil migration along the wires from the oil sensor in the sump to the primary turbo which gets into the turbo's electronics. The preventative is a short additional section of wiring harness that halts the oil migration. The L322 version doesn't have this problem due to the sensor being mounted externally.

Yes was my issue two turbos to fix. The prices you are being quoted are a joke. You can rebuild the turbo for way less , and as you have found out DPF cleaning isn't a big deal.

As the car is out of warranty I would be checking around for better solutions. Range rover don't make the turbo so you should be even able to buy new for less than RR are wanting .Places like Turbo Logic do full rebuild's on big turbos for $1200. If you were doing yourself parts might come to a couple of hundred. This is for mechanical and assumes the electronics are OK.

Big issue is make sure the car has had the fix for the oil sender leak , if this is the real reason for failure you may be successful in getting Range Rover to come to the party.

When my control unit was flooded with oil I had DFP failure , but in fact it had not , all sorts of codes were set off. Where are you located ? May be worth asking how they have diagnosed the issue as the codes will not be giving the correct diagnosis.
