Rise in engine temp towing uphill

My SDV8 always travels on normal temp midway on gauge. However I have noticed when on cruise control when towing uphill I have had the temp climb towards the red on 3 occasions. I manually change down and the temp decreases quickly. Strange however this does not happen on all inclines. The temp seems to come down so fast it is almost like the thermostat isn't working correctly? It may also be the auto trans is getting very hot, I believe the auto cooler is part of the engine cooling system.

Everything is normal just strange . if thermostat could be the issue I would just replace as preventive maintenance any ideas?

As the gauge will only rise above normal when particularly hot, perhaps on most hills the temperature isn't quite getting to the point that triggers the gauge to move. I would be changing the thermostat for starters.

theres been a bit of chatter about LA's "averaging" temp guage.

I would be either fitting a temp gauge that tells you the temp right now or reading from your ecu with an appropriate engine data scanner.

the only time I've been caught out was when not using the above.....I was lucky when a head gasket let go on my td5.

early warning would have forseen this

Yesterday I climbed out of Adelaide on their M1, if ever this thing was going to fail, that wouldve been a good indicator. It sat over 2K( that will tell you how bad it was..), at full boost, for several minutes.
I doubt theres another highway climb like it in Oz...

Were you towing a 3.2 ton van ? This heating only seems to occur when I leave the can in cruise control so I am thinking that the temp rise may be due to Transmission temp?

    Will order IID tool.

That is what you need to do and monitor temps, engine, gearbox, rad fan revs, etc.
    Without it you are guessing.

I have the Scan tool now, GAP which has live values. Screen setup is a bit average but reckon I can keep and eye on things real time now.
