The Gift that keeps on giving--

This on disassembly... and yes, that is a turbo

    As always, comments welcome.

Only one question on this end, where does that oil end up?

    Vapour gets burnt.
Liquid builds up in the intercooler until one day you accelerate, gulp some oil from the intercooler, engine cylinder goes hydraulic lock, engine goes bang.
At least I know of a couple of TDV8 L320s that have done that. Assume same can happen to any other turbo diesel :-(

That is, however, quite a lot of oil pre intercooler.

If that's the secondary turbo then not really an issue if you've been keeping revs low trying to keep the temperature down with the leaking head gasket, not providing any opportunity for the oil to clear.

Yes Graeme, thats the secondary, and NO revs for a week before disassembly..
apparently the secondary leak is worse than the primary..

and I've confirmed the intercoolers get a bath..

The LR WSM instructions for removing hoses from the 3.0 D4's secondary isolation/change-over valve include being prepared to collect oil as the hoses are disconnected. It's not at all unusual for oil to accumulate in air tracts for the part-time secondary turbo especially on the 4.4 which performs so well using only the primary turbo.
It's similar to people getting concerned at hearing lots of noise from inside the motor or seeing vapour when the oil filler cap is removed.

    Hmmm....

lots of SDV8's running around on original turbos... (though I would think only a few doing the hard yards this thing does..)

no way for the recon company to check turbo leakage under load...

I suppose its a warranty thing too.. if they DONT replace them and it becomes an issue, then....

its all water under the bridge now... and its suddenly beer oclock here in sunny Moana Beach.. Thanks Mrs Pedro!
