    Question Cross rails only.

We've just purchased a new Discovery Sport SE. We opted not to purchase the factory roof rails and cross bars as we were starting to hit our limit and the dealer suggested getting after market cross bars that clamp onto the car. Has anyone had any experience with this and most importantly, does this mark the vehicle? Currently looking at Rhino Racks (Vortex 2500). We'd mainly have bikes (2) on the bars and an occasional kayak.

    Hi

I’ve just put the rhino cross bars on our disco sport. Find them to be very strong for our kayak and paddle board. They do look bulkier than the rails but the cost that we saved I’m happy!

    After Market Rails

    Hi AJOliver,

We too did not want to be hit with the massive charge for the roof rails and I bought some aftermarket "Chinese" imports.
I can't remember how much exactly, maybe around $300.
They came with a set of installing spacers (which you will find out all about if you start investigating), I threw their instructions and used the downloaded LR DS instructions instead.

Installed very easy, I was a diesel mechanic in a previous life... a long time ago so nuts and bolts may come easier to me than others but I would still give it a 3/10 for difficulty. Properly read instructions and you can't go wrong.
The fit..... the rubbers we a little off but nothing a bit of super glue couldn't fix to hold in the right position till bolted down. The actual rails were a good fit too, holes and protrusions lined up nicely every time. The finish was almost faultless, the very very very end of one rail had not been painted (a line about 2mm x 30mmm... which you can't see once installed unless you really look. easily painted black though.
My only gripe was the plastic bolt covers, a bit flimsy and about an 6/10 score for a flush tight fit.

I haven't held the real thing in my hands but these Chinese copies seem sturdy and good quality. I have had easily up to the 75kg limit on the rails (coleman shelter & tables tied to racks and camping stuff loaded into Pod)... and truthfully was probably a bit over weight on the larger camping trips. Absolutely no problems on the rails, I have even stood on them before fixing my pod storage roof-lifter ropes, so can highly recommend the rails.

Send me a message if your interested (and in Sydney) and I try and dig up the place and exact price.
    cheers
    AY
