    Oil Leak - Discovery Sport 2016 L550 HSE 2.2ltr D

    Dear Experts,

I've recently bought 2016 Discovery Sport from a reputable dealer in Melbourne.

Only recently I found oil marks in driveway and took it local mech, it seems that they leak is coming from where transmission/transfer case joins the engine. I will try to attach some photos for referencce.

    Need some help understanding:

    1) Are such defects covered under Statutory Warranty?
    2) How much repair costs it could be to fix the seals?
    3) Any one else experienced this with similar model or same engine/trans type e.g Evoque / R Sport etc.
    4) Is AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) fitted in all HSE model, i feel mine is there but is not effective, i have checked and reset all options but still feels the car gives no warning as i close in into a front car within speeds listed by Landrover for it to be effective. Any software upgrades by LR dealer fixes it?

Car is 55,000 kms driven. How could such leak happen at low kms. Everything else in car is top notch.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Regards,
    F

Mate had this exact problem on his 2016 DS, took it back 4 or 5 times to be fixed.
I think they said it was a blocked breather that caused the seal to fail.

This leak is a known issue and not that uncommon. It is caused by a rubber seal in the splined shaft between the PTU and transmission becoming dislodged during normal movement, allowing transmission fluid to leak out. It was just a flawed design, and since about 2018 there has been a modified part that solves the problem. You can have this fitted to older cars and the part itself is not expensive, but unfortunately the wheel, drive half shaft, and PTU have to come out to do it so the expense is in the labour - especially at main dealer rates!

In general, JLR are very reluctant to admit problems, and dealers are happy to give you any BS so that they can charge you for the repair. However, as this is one of a number of known issues with this car, if you are persistent and show you know what has caused it, JLR will usually come to the table and fix it under 'goodwill' if the original manufacturers warranty has run out. If not then you are looking at between AU$2000-3000 cost. My dealer identified the problem immediately because they'd had it a number of times before, and they fixed it under my extended warranty because they said it was just easier to claim through the third party who underwrites the JLR extended warranty than to argue with JLR!

Pictures below show the same leak as yours, on my car, The PTU and where the shaft sits. And what the shaft sleeve looks like, and you can see the black rubber oil seal which causes the problem at the bottom end of it.

My girlfriend is looking at a DS. Same leak. Took it to Dovers Automotive for assessment. They said that all do it. The issue is there is a superfluous dust seal between the seals that seal the transmission and the PTU that gets caught up and then damages the transmission seal. They said they have had success redoing the seal and leaving out the additional dust seal and not seen reoccurrence. The quote was approximately $2000 to repair. The second hand dealer is repairing it at a Land Rover specialist as part of the sale - quite surprised.

I too have this issue and have asked for a quote from a local independent mechanic. I'd usually like to do my own repairs but as this is something that I have no idea about I'l seek the quote first. I thought there was very little interweb info on the Freelander 2 but then the DS is way worse.PTU Leak.jpg

    Me Too!!

Hi - last week I returned from my daughters wedding interstate to find a pool of clear oil about 30cm round under the front of my 2015 L550 DS in the long term carpark! Is it possible to do fix this and where do I access the updated parts. Is the updated part only available from Landrover or OEM? I have asked for a couple of quotes. Last year I had the gear joystick, the computer module on top of the auto and the transmission valve body changed over and the cost a mint so I am reticent to subjest myself to the same treatment at JL. thanks for your help. My brothers are mechanics who have auto experience though not Landrover mostly Jap Prado / Patrol etc.

The special tools required mean it’s not worth trying to DIY, but that’s up to you I guess. Land Rover is where you get the parts from.
