    Extended warranty advice

Hey Everyone. I am currently looking at purchasing a 2017 (my18) Discovery Sport TD4 SE.

I was just wondering if there is any company anyone would recommend for extended warranty? As Im unable to do it through Land Rover due to manufacturer warranty being expired.

Also, a very rough ballpark on the average service cost?

I appreciate any help you can offer.

I have a 2016 DS and at that point they only offered a three year manufacturers warranty, so after that expired I bought their extended warranty for another two years. This was basically an insurance policy branded by JLR but underwritten by Allianz Insurance. This took me to five years but after that there's no official JLR offering, but some dealers can arrange extended warranties through third parties. Mine is one of those, and the policy they offered me was underwritten by ERIC, and I was quoted AU$3,000 for two year's cover in years six and seven.

However, knowing that the dealer would no doubt be getting a commission on this I also got a quote direct from ERIC on their website. It turned out that by going direct I could get exactly the same policy but three years coverage and for only AU$2,000. I suspected the dealer was getting a decent referral fee but didn't expect it to be that much!

Needless to say I took the policy out direct.

I am not recommending this insurance, and have not had to claim on it so can't attest to how easy or difficult they are, I'm just relating my experience. But, as it is the same company that my dealer recommended I believe they should have a good working relationship, and my theory is that they are much less likely to give a dealer who knows what they are talking about and is an agent of theirs the run around, than they are an individual like me. But, we will see if I ever have to claim.

    Hello Dyllon,

I spent a lot of time researching about warranties on used cars. At the time there were a lot of consumer complaints and enquires about how the conditions of the warranties were so restrictive all you were doing was putting money into the warranty company and the dealer's pockets. Accessed 27th April 2022 from “Almost completely worthless” – used car warranties catching out countless Australians - Consumer Action Law Centre. So I declined the offer. Six months into ownership of the vehicle the oils were sucked through the cooling system and pumped out the radiator overflow tank. I caught the motor before the damage was fatal. It turns out there is a 'not if but when' notification online that the series of oil seals between the top of the engine valley and the oil cooler break down under heat. It took six months for my independent mechanic to get the repair job done - between their other jobs. I am left wondering if I had bought the warranty whether or not I would have had to pay the $4700 to get the car back on the road? It would have meant that the vehicle had to go to the recommended dealer though. Locally, that company is not renown for its competence either. Lots of dealerships of different brands with an equal mastery of none.

Make sure any warranty covers the cost of labour. The parts were very reasonably priced. It was the totally crap design of all the components that had to be removed before the oil cooler could be reached that made the repair cost high. Then everything had to be put back together again. So lots of labour hours. It was if the engineers had a contest to see how much stuff they could put on top or around the oil cooler so they could block access to it.

Would I get a warranty on a used car? Depending upon whether it covered labour - despite all the publications about the worthlessness of some warranties .... yes I would! Again - only if it covered labour as well as parts

What happened... accessed 27th April 2022 from, Mercedes Oil Leak V6 Diesel OM642 (Oil Cooler Seals) - YouTube

    Kind regards
    Lionel
