2015 L550 TD4 Burning Smell & White Smoke From Bonnet - Question About Repair Costs

    G'day everyone,

    9 months ago in October '21 I bought a 2015 Discovery Sport L550 TD4 from a registered used car dealer, ~110k kms.

After a month or two of driving noticed that occasionally when idling at a complete stop after driving for some while an extremely strong burning fuel/plastic smell would start venting into the cabin through the air con vents. If I turned on re-circulated air con the smell would stop being vented through.

The smell was never too much of a problem as I could just turn on re-circulation and it would be gone, but I mentioned it in March '22 when I took it in to Land Rover Brisbane for a logbook service. The rep there said when I started describing the issue that he knew what it was and would get it fixed, when I picked it up told me they had replaced a few filters etc. which usually fixes the issue. Of course, it didn't, but I kept pushing on with the re-circulation method.

More recently as the weather has gotten colder I've noticed that when I turn on re-circ to stop the smell venting into the cabin, instead it seems a noticeable amount of white smoke or steam vents out either side of my bonnet instead. The fact that it's much more visible in colder weather makers me think it might be steam? Either way it's very worrying and not a good look in traffic.

I reached out to the dealer, who booked me in at a Zupps service centre, apparently one of the few with Land Rover diagnostics capabilities. They came back to me saying that after reaching out to Land Rover for a quote for replacement parts, the total cost of the repair would be $5k, with none of it covered under warranty (statutory or the extended warranty I purchased (I know, I know it was mainly for roadside assist)). The dealer recommended I take the car to another mechanic some distance away in Redcliffe, where I've booked it in for a second opinion.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the issue might be, and whether that's a reasonable amount for a fix or not? I love the car but really can't afford to pay that out of pocket right now.

    The receipt from Zupps says:
Upper sump leaking (needs resealing), lower sump leaking,
exhaust dump pipe & v-band clamp, egr cooler gaskets,
requires sealant, coolant possible further parts required
Also requires oil and oil filter replacent

Sorry for the lengthy post, thanks for any info you can share!

EDIT: I've recorded a video of where I think the leak/smoke is coming from.
