The defender may live on with fresh interest

Article in the most recent LROI mag reports that INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe is undertaking feasibility study to build a modern defender with a focus on military, North America and Africa. The article is scant on details but the caption from INEOS was it would be an expedition type vehicle to compete with land cruiser reliability.

LRJ said its not interested in selling tooling or joining forces.

Just need a direct line to Jim to convince him a V8 diesel with strong running gear is what Africa (and Oz) needs.

pardon my ignorance but what is INEOS?

no build information on any modern defender will come from anywhere other than JLR..... and JLR are NOT releasing information about ANY modern defender.

btw all 4wd vehicles coming out of Thailand are being developed with smaller , more powerful , torquier engines.....not V8's.

INEOS is a chemical company. The Chairman is worth GBP5 billion. He loves his Rovers.

The Article suggested reverse engineering. After all the defender technology is ancient in motoring terms. INEOS comments took the view that any technology LRJ owns in respect of the defender is now past the usual protections. Reading the article my impression was that it would be old school rugidness, better reliability and safety features to meet the US market. MLD

Sounds like an opportunity to put the 'executive email carpet bomb' to use for good, rather than evil.

I'm pretty sure even the Santana had rack & pinion steering, and the modified the firewall to fit a more modern dash. So re-engineering is possible. For some reason they stayed with s3 type spring set up.

I had hopes but I think the Ineos project has gone off the rails.

IMO Ratcliffe should get onboard with Bollinger,
If he dosen't get his act into gear he will miss the boat like JLR have done long ago.

Sadly, I am starting to think that the new Deefer will be a no-show. I think JLR will use the VW-inspired monkey murders to declare that "no-one wants a "real" 4wd with a diesel engine anymore, so we'll just concentrate on the yuppie market. Thanks for your loyalty, would you mind joining the hairdresser queue? "
    Sad, isn't it?
