If you knew how much work the mods have had to put in behind the scenes on this thread , you would understand why some of us who wish the new defender was a wait and see, but it isnt , so we will just count down the days till release and go around the circle again on what may or may not be the new 2020 defender.

Hmm..Actually there is plenty that has been said on record and showed publicly about the new defender (both officially and via spy shots), to a point that some would feel they have a pretty good idea of what it will and won't be. Thats just my opinion.

Yes I agree you are a nasty nasty little mod and because of you disrespecting the the brand and picking on me you should be banned - but in all seriousness I know what you mean some need to not take things so seriously - the sun will still come up tomorrow even if the new vehicle is not what they expect.

Yep , opinions are good, and everyone is entitled to have one, whether it's for or against the topic.
Sadly it gets very quickly forgotten when discussing this topic.

    Deadly

Comparing 2 foot wide F1 tyres to road going 4x4 profile tyres is more than a stretch.

So your saying on passenger cars high profile tyres are safer than low profile? sorry mate, from where im sitting physics don't work like that.

That Jeep failing the ‘Elk Test’ shouldn’t have happened. They underdid the development of the suspension when they went up in tyre size and lower profiles on their top spec Grand Cherokee’s. Stupid buggers. Embarrassment for Jeep with the bad publicity, and outright dangerous for any owner of their 2012/13 models before the fix!

F1 tyres are that size because they have to be because of the rules. 13" wheels to limit brake size, tyres not allowed to be larger than a certain diameter front and rear. Not a good example as it's a highly regulated category.
But Supercars have run the smallest dia rim they could get away with traditionally to give some compliance and therefore mid corner grip on the bumpies. They only went from 17 to 18 inch because most motorsport tyres are 18s and 17s drove the cost way up. The are all on control wheels, tyres, brakes... everything really now.
Like with most things they are a compromise and there's a sweet spot that depends on your application. Higher profiles are generally better off road, lower are generally better on road (to a point).

Yep, but that's my point, you can make a tall tyre for a 13" rim work well at high speed/huge loads.
There are some trick tyres available in motorsport to suit size regs, and as you've mentioned compliance is a good thing to have, as is having a reasonable tyre spring rate.
We don't need 40 series tyres on modern cars, they aren't necessary from a handling/road holding POV, but style dictates people want large rims.

60% aspect ratio seems to be the current sweet spot between compliance and not too much distortion, rally and off road racing (not including the US off road race scene) after to have settled on that profile.
