Medium profile tyres are about also trying to stop rollovers, which is one of the biggest risks in a 4x4 that travels at high speeds onroad or offroad.

You have to think about people trying to go on long expeditions on/off-road and picking the right tyre/wheel combo that can do everything well, not just off-road (16)and not just onroad (20), middle seems to work well these days with tyre sizes available in LT (18)

Huge number of members on here run 18s with decent sized rubber and the world doesn't end for them.

15s used to be the offroad standard, then 16s, now ultra 4 racers are running 17s, but remember they are off-road only and beadlocked.

Bowler run 18s and win rallys, I see the new defender being able to run very similar wheel/tyre combos to the bowler bulldog.

18 are proven as extremely capable offroad and onroad.

I would go so far as to say if the new defender did not run 18s or thereabouts i would be disappointed. I am after a wheel/tyre combo that can do EVERYTHING well, not just offroad.

Its about getting the balance right for a modern and safe, tourer and 4x4.

Jeep also know how to get a 1 star safety rating (JL) , no way I would be driving my family around oz in one.

Ill take 18s on a new Defender anyday, im guessing it will get a 5 star safety rating like the D5.

Patrol tyre is 265/70/18.

Running the wrong type of tyre for the road conditions also significantly reduces safety.

As an example,think high speed dirt roads,which are very common here in Aus.

Thats why the OEM 19" tyre size for the D4 had so many well documented complaints,there isn't a suitable high load rated off road tyre of similar size available that would fit the rim.

Its only in the last few years that high load rated off road tyres have been readily available for the D3/4 18" rim without going larger than the OEM diameter size.

70 percent of 265 would be fine (on any rim)..but I very much doubt any new LR would have that as standard. Also on the beach a 245/80/16 would have the edge there aired down (longer footprint) but I would be happy with a compromise of 265/70/18. But we know that LR have run in the past 255/60/18 which has a much lower sidewall than a 265/70/18. For many years Nissan have well understood the importance of sidewall height for offoading and have not compromised on that. LR have to the betterment of on road handling and to save unsprung weight (and cost too i suspect). I would be happy if tbe new Deefer ran 18's with big sidewall like the Nissan but cant imagine they will. Cheers

Spot on, its seems that that legacy is sticking around in some peoples minds even though its no longer an issue.

Good article here, where they admit they had to change their position on lower profile tyres as tyre manufactures caught up

Low Profile Tyres don't belong on 4WDs

Tyres on this mule look to be 65 profile which is a good size for a safe tourer that can hold its own on the blacktop in an emergency both with braking and swerving but still not have a problem offroad.

Having said that, I don't know anyone that heads off-road and keeps the same tyre as stock so I would say people that want even more bias towards off-road in the new Defender will find a way to fit even higher profiles pretty quickly.

Nissan and Land Rover are ahead of the game here. Jeep are for some reason living in the dark ages where the vehicle occupant safety of your family doesn't seem to matter. Looking at the myriad spy pics I think it'd be reasonable to assume tyre diameter around the 31-32" mark (ie. Rest-of-range size to +1") so an 18" would still have reasonable sidewall (as pictured). Plenty on here even running 20s *gasp* offroad at that sort of size. A bit compromised for the harder-core but still works pretty well all round. I'd say that 18s aren't the end of the world at all. I wouldn't fit them to my D1 by choice, but don't need to either. I put 15s on for a while, but then went back to the 16s and just increased tyre diameter by 1" to maintain sidewall.

No I agree it's it 18s per se but why I'm against them in the JLR context is that unlike Nissan, JLR don't do standard tyre heights to make them reliable and great off-road. I might well be in the market again if LR put decent stock rubber on the new Deefer. But...we will see.

Why are you so concerned about that panel join?

Theres nothing you can do about it and its obviously having the desired affect on you that JLR are looking for.
