Hmm well JLR have said on record that they have pushed the discovery closer to Range Rover and more upmarket.

So logically the new defender would come in under that at base, especially considering they have said on record there will be utilitarian up to luxury models.

65-70k is my tip for base, but who knows.

LC200 starts at 77k for 2019

That price will get you one with not much more than a steering wheel inside the cabin. [bigwhistle] I did a 'build' on the LR website a few weeks ago, and even with the base engine, even a few small upgrades will see the price over $90K pretty quick and if you want the decent powerplant, the sky's the limit.

Bare Bones

Bare bones doesn't mean coil springs though. Bare bones to most people when considering a good off road vehicle used in low range conditions must mean, when talking indepenent suspension, air springs cross linked to simulate as best it can live axles...so base model D5 no good for that (and it doesn't have low range) and as soon as you go dual range and air springs you are very close to $100k without breaking a sweat. I hope the air suspended version of the new Defender will be cheaper than a D5 but I reckon it might be wishful thinking. Anyway we will see soon enough.

Unless L/R put up a version that is fairly capable for around 60K or less , to match the cost of a hilux or Ranger , then they will be a flop like the rest of the L/R stable.

I dont think they have had a car in the top 15 best sellers here that i can remember. Im guessing the new batch of clone vehicles D5/RRS/RR/Discovery would be outside the top 20 at the price structure JLR have put on them . Then again they didnt bother testing the pretender here so i assume the Aussie market is not high on their list.

I should think the bare bones Defender version with coil springs will be the cheapest entry into the market, which is precisely what many people will be chasing.

Going on previous form, the D4 was produced as a special simplified version with coil springs (ala D3 S) purely for the South African market. Many people in SA did not want the airbag suspension version (with or without terrain response) due to worries (unfounded or not) about being stranded in the middle of nowhere if all the gizmos failed.

Personally, I’m hoping the new Defender proves to be robust - mechanically and electronically, in all its versions (coils/airbags, ICE, PHEV etc) for when I need to replace my D3!
