Considering there hasn't been a V8 put in a Disco since 2012, I doubt a V8 will make it into the Defender. A six of any persuasion will be more than enough especially with electrical assistance.

As GB said, EV is the future, especially in Europe and the UK where ICE will be taxed to oblivion.

I think if LR could go full EV today, they would. MHEV and PHEV are all about bringing the people with you - much of the world is not ready for EV and these two options are about letting people dip their toe in the water (aside from getting more from less out of the ICE). It's a bridge to full EV.

True and EV is not ready for much of the world...ie battery tech has yet to take the step big enough to make it a viable option anywhere in Australia out of the major centres nor for people who dont want to wait long periods of time during a longer trip to recharge.

EV will work fine given a few years of development. And it won't be a choice anyway, ICE vehicles will be progressively banned from urban areas and hybrid or EV will be the only choice. It's already happening in London and parts of Europe.

I agree Mick. The battery tech is close but it's not Lithium that will do it. So to my mind in Oz the current crop are just not suitable to many Australians. But once the new battery tech goes commercial in a few years it's all go.

Yes, and people are wrong to assume they will have a choice. It will become compulsory not to take vehicles which can't meet the latest emissions standards into certain areas. Those who break the rules will be arrested. About 10,000 Britons die of emissions-related diseases every year, and similar in other places, including about 1000 in Australia, so the health issues will override personal liberty.

In my opinion "leaving the g wagon in the shade" would be hard to do without a V8 version, remember they are optional you don't have to get one if you don't want one.

I agree V8 in the future may die off however they are still very much a wanted resource across most markets with most manufacturers still offering them as an option.. modern V8 are far more efficient than the old gas-guzzling ones, throw some mild hybrid or hybrid tech in with them and they become much more viable.

My hunch is that a V8 might not be available at launch and but it may become available in an svx version similar to what was going to happen for the discovery 5.
Also most likely when they decided to cut the svx Disco for cost savings, they said let's just do it with the Defender.

If they do decide to run a V8 one things for sure it will be a very efficient one.

I have not looked into the efficiency of the latest generation BMW V8s.

Having said that I could be wrong and the new inline 6 maybe everything anyone that wants a bit of poke in their Defender could need and more.

If tuned to full spec you are talking 400 ponies for the straight 6...enough go even for that young hoon who posts on here sometimes...forgotten his handle but he likes welding together centre diffs using Chevy V8's [emoji1787][emoji16].

That is interesting. Guess that makes me a dual outlier as I own and drive two Perenties and a County 110 and have never owned a Jeep.

The real question will be if any V8 can meet the increasingly stringent emissions regulations. Unless it can, it won't be available, no matter how much people might want one.
