You can argue all you like about the complexities of modern diesels and the fuel efficiency of modern petrols. Until this changes, they are both moot points. No doubt this will change in time, but for now and in the immediate future, diesel is the best option for outback travel.

Petrol v Diesel | Australia On Track

Apparently opal fuel is now sold remotely (non snifable)

CSR is probably one of the spots a diesel would be better unless you have good large safe petrol tanks.

No denying diesel is more convenient and safer in the "very isolated remote outback" currently. However for the rest of OZ petrol wins on paper these days imo in regards to both reliability and long term cost.

There was a post on the faceache y62 page a while back of a guy doing the csr in his modified patrol, had no issues with fuel, averaged 22L/100. I did it in a 79 series, averaged 19.4L/100, 1600km of non comfort! Patrol would have been sooooo much better.

Those are huge fuel consumption figures. I would be unhappy with either of them.

While that makes perfect sense, I haven’t heard of this before - any chance you can point out the relevant legislation? Is it a State based thing because I’ve not heard it mentioned here in Vic. Not trying to start an argument - genuinely interested, as I have carried petrol in a rear mounted jerry can before. The 101 has a side mounted jerry can so not an issue (and a 160 litre main tank so range isn’t a huge issue where I go even with the sort of consumption it has)

That’s about what my 101 does on the highway at 90, doubtless much worse on extended off-road runs like this, but haven’t had the pleasure yet, so no idea. 😊

FWIW,the ingenium 6 petrol is available in some Rangies in other markets.

The diesel doesn't seem to be available yet,maybe they are saving it for the new Deefer[thumbsupbig]

Not sure where I heard or read that. Was a long time ago. Diesel in most states is an unregulated fuel whereas Petrol is regulated.
