I own two Defenders from different eras. They are basically the same vehicle almost 20 years apart ( which is why I like them). The newer one is much more complex in terms of electronics and with some sub-standard driveline parts, and it uses more fuel than the older simpler one.

But the biggest difference between them is the old one is noisy and rattly. But in another 15 years the newer one will be noisy and rattly.

Toyota 70 Series has always been Defenders main competitor. It hasn’t changed much either. The main reason Defender didn’t sell as many as Toyota is poor customer service and marketing, including the shift to focussing primarily on the luxury urban market and not taking the Defender market seriously. That’s where they dropped the ball.

The small niche of wierdy beardies like me liked Defender and could see benefits of the vehicle over the competitors. But the majority wanted something less sophisticated as a work vehicle, with a large dealer network.

The next Defender will be even more complex and alienate the simple work vehicle market even further.
So Rav4s, Klugers, fortuners and 200series are also in the same class, luxury SUVs? Using your logic, they all look the same 2.

Sorry but just because some of JLRs 4x4s have similar styling cues on the front end for brand recognition, it doesn't make them all look the same, i honestly don't believe you have gone to a dealer and sat, walked around or looked at them all. They all look fundamentally different, perform different and are bought for different purposes. A D5 looks like an Evoque, please
A RRV looks like an Fpace? No

Yes there all from the same company, share tech and have similarities, but no they are vastly different cars and all look different, its fact, not opinion.

Lets not forget the defender V1 was and still is part of the lineup under the CEOs watch and they kept it the same for as long as possible for fans, however as the link above stated, it simply was not possible anymore, change is needed.

Having tech is not an issue, its reliability and durability is, as is the case with planes.

A large proportion of the population having serious doubts about reliability is another reason Toyota 79 sales exceed Defender sales.

The factory issues that i can count on 1 hand with a puma can be fixed at any good Landrover specialist in 1 day, you are never going to get perfection from any manufacturer.
After that you have one of the most capable reliable long distance tourers on the market.

Price shows desirability just like with the RRC.
I didn't say who desires them, just they are the most desirable.

To be honest guys, 95% percent of people are going to buy the new defender even if its full of tech, which is what MOST people want. JLR are not intending to please everyone with the new fender, just most.

If they wanted to please a few that want the defender 20 years ago reincarnated, they would not be able to please most.

Hang on they will reincarnate a defender for you from 20 years ago(so will LRA) under there classic program and also support parts for even the oldest models, so what's the issue guys?

Looks like JLR are looking after fans of the old defender and the majority that want something more comfortable, safe and modern.

Keep positive guys, you will live longer Won’t be retro...

We have already been over all the points as to why The new Defender has to be safer, environmentally friendly and more comfortable both from a legal and financial standpoint. So lets move on shall we, it had to happen and needed to happen and did happen, the alternative was to can it. Lets not cry over spilt milk, that most people wanted spilt and may not be as spilt as you think Won’t be retro...

New defender looks hot to me and thats with the camo Won’t be retro...

On the contrary, more than 95% of people in the world are not going to buy the new Defender, for many reasons.

I don’t think anyone wants “the defender 20 years ago reincarnated”, that perception is entirely outmoded. We’ve been over that point ad nauseum.

Defender people actually want a new Defender, not just a new D4 or D5 under a different skin.
