Hi folks
When I was a kid at school, at the very dawn of the computer age, we were once given a card with a number of inane career related questions like 'would you like to wear a hat at work?'. We poked holes in the card to answer questions and then they were sent through the amazing 'the computer' machine (back then it was always 'the' computer).
Based on the science of the day I was destined to become a 'brewer'.
So I was excited to match my current lifestyle against the online 'package' selector tool on the Land Rover website...
I drive a 2012 110 HCPU with chassis beefed up from the factory, and full external roll cage, because rollover is a genuine daily risk. I live on a wilderness property in the Top End, my house is built on a escarpment accessible only by steep rocky tracks. In the wet season I tend to fly in and out of home more than I drive. The 8km track from my house to my front gate becomes impassable and requires deep wading. I use an old 70 series for most of my property work, but its a gutless wonder and struggles with the steepest tracks. I value my HPCU for its cross country performance and payload crossing the roughest terrain.
Anyway, I was totally befuddled by the lifestyle choices I was offered by the package selector tool. There was nothing there that I could even slightly relate to!
After scrolling through the pictures, I sought safety in the familiar and so clicked the dog picture. My boy rides in my Land Rover beside me whenever he can...
Then I saw a tractor picture....Yup, got one of them, but my country doesn't look much like those pretty green fields in the pic.. Still I clicked that one too in desperation.
Then all the people falling from the sky... I skydived as a kid but these days the dog and I prefer to be enclosed in our aircraft.... so I passed up on that opportunity.
I saw a pic of a sophisticated middle aged couple drinking coffees on an Italian cafĂ
al fresco. I thought, yeah Im old and I buy coffees at Adelaide River servo when I drive to the big city, so I'll tick that one too...
There's one little picture of a muddy dirt track and I thought "Yes, welcome to my world!" That got the tick too.
But all the rest of the pics were of bearded young couples (I mean just the blokes were bearded), riding bikes off road, or skiing, or surfing or skateboarding or being dragged along by a kite.
Honestly, how much time can you spend being dragged behind a kite, and would that really influence your car purchase decision?
Anyway, having reviewed my choices, I pushed the results button and waited with baited breath.
I got the 'adventure' pack.
Not the more hardcore explorer pack. But at least the adventure pack comes with that little plastic suitcase thing stuck on the window. So if my HPCU ever dies on me, and I replace it with a 'Land Rover adventure pack', I can carry my rocks, cement, star pickets and jackhammer in the little suitcase. Awesome!
Needless to say, I never became a brewer either.
Who else tried the pack selector tool? What did you think?
