From a marketing POV it's trying to introduce the brand to a younger (single, couples) market, then hopefully keep them following through with the full size versions as their purchasing power and family grows.
But it just dilutes the standing and history of the badge.
Sure but onlyyounger (single, couples) that have $60K+ to spend on a car.
Their decision to do a family of defenders, is smart, it works for RR, it works for Disco, it will work for Defender.
Dilute? Hmm , RR is more RR than it has ever been, despite those "diluting" little Evoque and velars getting around that every girl wants [emoji6] Same goes for disco.
The people that make these calls have solid business cases, worked out by people much smarter than us.
The naysayers were around when evoque was released 25k per year they said.
Whatever helps LR succeed, im all for, just means more money for more potential models, like SVX, 130 & Utes etc.
Remember nothing is fact here yet until we hear from LR
I love Land Rover / Range Rover. After all I have a few of them (55 - 98). Series I, II, III, Perentie, 101, Range rover 2 Door, Range Rover 4 Door, Freelander, Discovery, etc....
I want a new Defender.
But FFS - so many of them look the same and occupy the same price bracket.... [emoji26]

New PS25k Land Rover to be followed by luxo-Defender | Autocar
We have been riding our motorcycle through UK and Europe for last 6mths, and going by seat of the pants numbers seen on the roads all over, without Freelander's/ Disco sports and Evoques Land Rover would not exist. Hopefully if LR get the R word right this time, new Defender will strengthen that. I know it certainly has made me think it may be time to upgrade from my 300tdi RRC (not sell it mind just get it a mate).
So this cheapie Defender will be based on the ewok platform which means an east-west engine layout - yuk [bigsad].
It has the potential to be a really good seller, without impacting on Evoque or Discovery Sport sales. Especially if it’s cheaper and is a lot different, eg broad range single range 9 speed auto.
