I have seen quite a few of those cause issues,with other vehicles,not mine.

Check out his comment around the 5 minute mark... looks like some of the panels are not aluminium, at least on the show cars. The cynic in me says they have produced the optional panel cover film stuff to reduce rusting after going through thick/scratchy bush. Not only are the panels produced cheaper, they can charge extra for the cover film stuff. [bighmmm]

Classic Defenders are full of steel in recent times.
Steel is hardly a problem. You don’t see much rust in 20yr old steel 4wds used for purpose.

Electrolysis gets most Defenders - just look at the numbers with rotted out door frames and bulkheads.

Interesting that some panels on my Mazda CX-3 are plastic, high grade certainly, but still plastic, but that is the way of vehicles these days it seems. I wouldn't be surprised if the Deffy was too.

Certainly a lot lighter & possibly even stronger than steel these days depending on the type of plastic used (???)

Roof, bonnet, Doors, Boot lid, fuel cap & a few other minor panels are steel but frontal & rear panels are plastic. Possibly less costly than some tin basher straightening them out after a prang as well, not to mention a quicker turnaround at the repair shop.

Plastic used to be for kid's toys, Tupperware etc but they have come a long way.

The repairer would just order up the already coloured & moulded part, tear off the protective film & fix it on. Job done. No blemishes, excellent fit & no future rust.


The days of taking a Magnet with you to check ally panels or not are over.[biggrin]

Because of all the 4wd industry marketing hype that tells people you can't go outback in a standard 4wd or you will perish. Then they try and sell all this cheap, poorly made crap to the punters so that they think they are ready for any adventure, when in reality all they have done is make their vehicle less reliable.

The front panels on the Freelander 1 are all plastic and it was designed 25 years ago, so LR has experience with this.

Yep & allied to this Jon is my pet aversion to irresponsible Camera 'persons' & photographers taking shots of a vehicle on a skewed angle that a vehicle can climb & descend "Mount Everest" so the target audience thinks "I'll have some of that," & promptly have a dangerous & failed ascent or descent when it is obvious they have exaggerated the angles to fulfill the Production Co's requirements for untrue bull**** to sell a vehicle.

People are so worried about things that very rarely go wrong, and if they do most wouldn’t have the ability to do most of the work - or have the spares needed.
