With 3.5t + towing and 900kg + payload and being relatively light weight, plus good economical engine options, it would be hard to beat for towing.

Upcoming commercial model asside the interior with all rear seats down is very work friendly, basically a ute with a canopy that can transform into a proper fam 4x4.

Fuel tank size means nothing without economy figures, might be small for v8 deseil but large for 4cyl twin turbo. Range should be the question, not tank size

I'm yet to be convinced about that. I'm not a fan of these tiny over stressed diesel engines, but time will tell. The straight 6 petrol looks like the go for power. When you say it would be hard to beat for towing I'm not so sure, but again I'll keep an open mind and time will tell. IMO opinion they should have used a bigger diesel, they already have great options in the range rover so why they didn't use a bigger engine is beyond me.

Unless your work requires carriage of things that cannot be legally or sensibly carried inside the passenger compartment - e.g. many agricultural chemicals, larger LPG cylinders, working dogs.

Also, difficult to load pallets of 'anything' with a forklift, or bales of hay with a FEL.

No, not a work ute of any kind.

We know at a good guess what the range is,and it’s nothing fantastic,with any of the engines.

What we don’t know is the usable amount the tank holds,as per D4 experience.

As I said it’s not all about point to point touring sitting on 80 km/ hr saving fuel.

It’s about real life driving,towing,off roading,remote area touring,etc,etc.

Sure fuel can be carried,but it’s a pain,and carrying and decanting petrol is not that safe.

Most people add expensive alloy or fibre canopys or add expensive tool boxes to utes for security and you also have to cover your load these days.
A high payload durable utilitarian wagon is more desirable these days for work if your work permits than in days gone by, however 100% will not suit all work but we will see the new defender in a large variety of commercial and non commercial work scenarios.

Bigger straight 6 diesel is coming from what I remember, when you say over stressed, is there any proof that these LR engines are overstressed or are they designed to make high power and be fuel efficient and reliable, the 4cyl engenium has been around for a while now.

The numbers imo with current options point to a great tower, tourer, daily.

You describe types of work were its not possible, the list of work it would be possible is pretty big.
Red cross has already signed the new defender and they do an incredible amount of work worldwide each year in extremely difficult scenarios.

These engines in other vehicles are not being pushed the way they will be in the defender.

I don't think there are many d5s being used that hard, sure some are but the majority is doing the shopping and school run. I don't like small capacity diesel engines unless they are conservatively tuned in which case most will complain that they don't have enough balls ie 2.2 puma
