I get simplicity, that I understand but tying to sell me that one should hold onto a vehicle for 20+ years is a joke. We live in Australia, not some 3rd world country where they pollute the earth terribly with co2 emissions that tower ours.

Mate realistically my D2 I.have driven (until very recently but it will rise again) for 17 years since new has caused a lot less environmental damage than me having bought 5 or 6 vehicles in that time.

More bad news I'm afraid, we are one of the highest, if not the highest emitters per capita, and a large part of that is due to the throw away society. They love the old Landies and Troopies in Africa because they are easy to fix and easily able to be converted to electric. Why not hold on to a vehicle if it serves your purpose, luckily cars don't come with a "use by" date after which they are removed and crushed.

Unfortunately I pro'ly will have to replace my D3 one day and the only L-R offering that suits me is the New Defender, but I'm not going to rush out and buy one just because it is new and shiny. I still have a few things to do on mine, (I'm all for modifying them to suit ones needs, even improving them with disc brakes, gal chassis, etc), ideas that I hope to carry over to it's replacement. I like to look after things and the last I heard my D2 TD5 was still driving around in "immaculate" condition.

You seem to miss the point. Regardless of what fails, if you have no capability to resolve it then you’re stuck.

If you have what you need and are capable of the work you can get going again, or limp it back to support.

Only recently a post showed an old Defender with a destroyed front diff on a flat bed - the owner wasn’t sure how to get it moving again.

Modern electronics rarely fail. Almost always a mechanical device. Modern electrics have significant redundancy and protection. A D4 for example can almost completely shut down an still limp back to civilisation. It will even conserve power by closing down less important systems until reserves are exhausted.

The most simplistic example of progress was the change from points to electronic ignition. Nobody went bush without several spare sets of points and condenser spares.
With the introduction of Electronic / Optical controlled ignition devices this went out the window.

Not saying nothing will break down; just that in a well maintained vehicle, driven with respect, it’s highly unlikely.

Nah just having a lend of ya good to hear 85 ECU’s will be reliable. ..they wouldn’t tell you your front diff is cactus though! But they should be able to tell you to remove the front prop shaft.

...so all this should mean that a full EV Defender will be the most reliable of all! ..maybe 2025? ...I’ll wait til then before I upgrade I reckon. More reliable, more torque, quieter, better for the environment.

I suspect most people get concerned about reliability partly because of the cars visible condition, and people associate age appearance with reliability.

I love it when people get into our cars and ask if we upgraded our car recently, and their surprise when I tell them it’s 11 years old.

Cars have a much longer life if when looked after. Vehicle life in Cuba is a great example of what is possible.

The new Defender will be no different.

I reckon the new Defer will be a cracker of a vehicle. But can we afford it is it socially acceptable can we move on from long held beliefs are all questions that those on this forum will consider. But, and here’s the but, JLR could not afford to design and supply to LR enthusiasts cause we’d bankrupt them
