Car is much bigger than the pics show..bigger than the D5 cause of the spare wheel. Seats do fold flat too but compared to our D4 SC I was a bit underwhelmed by the interior. Meridian Sound systems much the same too but infotainment system looks and performs good. Gear selector on dash a bit weird..sort of Citroen like. Seats again not as comfy as the D4..bit too stiff but may wear in. Materials are very workmanlike...wife won't like them..too rubbery😐

Engine gutsy but not as punchy...naturally ..as our SC..ride seemed about the same..but for 115k..mmm..think I'll wait for the 6cyl petrol.

Supply will be a major issue due to factory Covid catch up and we are at the arse end of the world..literally!

Salesman said it's tough atm due to model discounts by other makers.. I mentioned the Paj run out and he just shook his head saying how can we match that!

They also battle the local obsession with LCs and Prados which he said are grossly over valued and over rated mentioning the average yota owner spend at ARB is 10k.

I don't think we'll see too many Defers in Hobart for a while if at all.

He also said the resale value of D4s is increasing??

Anyhow it was a nice chat and an interesting vehicle but im not convinced yet it is a better car than the D4 SC which he rated v high..maybe the 6cyl will be🙄

    Oh and apparently there's a SCV8 Defer in Europe..which LR is evaluating🤤
compared to my Renault Koleos 2.5l NA petrol, the D240 goes like a cut cat so it’s all relative. I personally love the interior, I think it’s the perfect balance of being easy to clean, looking tough and premium. Also I quite like the centre console and gear stick and find the seats very comfortable.

But when you’ve spent $125k (5+2 D240FE) on a car you look at things in a positive light.

No diesels until at least end of 2021,possibly the 6,and then that isn't confirmed.D240 gone for good from the Defender range in Aus,wouldn't say why.Seems odd as its available in the D5.Rumours are Defender isn't paying for itself, with the D240.I suppose there is a heap of R and D that needs recouping.
    Only petrols,at starting base model price of $115K,i didn't ask,but i bet that is a 5 seater.
Petrol is pretty complicated, turbo and supercharged, and must run on premium.
There won't be many available until sometime next year.

Said can't compete with other makes, difficult with a diesel,no hope without one.
Doesn't seem like a good start at all,in Aus.Apparently the D240 will still be available in Defender in other markets.
I did notice D240 in D5 was derated in Aus about 6 months ago or so.I don't know why.

Anyway,i did see a green one on the road today, which was a surprise.
    Looked good.

One I looked at was a 7 seater with multiple seating configurations. Rear seats are much the same as the D4 in configuration and style ...maybe a bit smaller??

On reflection the car certsinly has presence but also a degree of blandness which the sales guy said was deliberate to emulate the old cars. The front seating is not as cosseting as our D4...a bit too open and flattish looking forward but providing more storage and utility functionality.

Trouble is we have gotren used to the wrap around style so an open flat dash takes some adjustment to the senses. Visibility forward is great..rear not so. Have to say the alpine windows are plain ugly from inside and the tail lights...mmmm..well they are different....look like a kid has cut and pasted them on.

One thing you can say about LR is that they are risk takers with both style and tech.

Oh and the 8 speed ZF auto is further refined..hardly noticeable in changes. Sales bloke said they've not seen any issues with the 8 speed across any models.

Yeah nothing for sale..delivery some time next year. More worrying was when I asked about booking a test drive he said....now☺

Rest of showroom and yard was empty of folk but it was Monday in Slobart.

Tilfords biggest seller remains the Ranger which he said fly out of the yard with Wildtrack orders increasing by the day. Says a lot about the Aussie market atm.

Gonna be a tough sell at 115k😐

But the base S model has pretty good specs, the SE only adds a couple of safety features, from memory.
Admittedly the two safety features should be in the S,they are the norm for any car these days.
But both have 5 seats, for those looking for a 7 seater, thats an expensive addition.

The petrol won't fit 18" wheels either, which is an issue for some.

The list of add ons, many very costly, is huge. Some are ridiculously priced, and would soon push the $115K up a lot higher.

Still a lot of money, but the vehicle is the latest and greatest, for those that want one.
Remember, some spend well over $150K to $300K on their vehicles. Not me,thats for sure.

For us,and many on here,we are not in the market for that type of expensive vehicle.

It definitely isn't an affordable family touring wagon for many.

Most in Aus will continue on with the Jap,Thailand and Korean vehicles, that are reasonably priced, not the latest and greatest, but do get the job done. And are diesel.
Euro 6 won't be in here until 2027,so there is still a long way to go on current crop of diesels.
After that who knows what is going to happen.

Yeah agree..I'm not writing it off..guess we're spoiled by the SC we have...to some degree at least.

I think you're comment about tough and premium materials is spot on and suits the overall character of the car...retro and yet modern...almost a bit futuristic in some regards.

    Head room too is fantastic.

I'm sure a longer drive in the 6 will be a different story rather than the rushed 4cyl demo we did.

It certainly wets the appetite whereas I almost fell asleep looking at the D5..despite the salesman reeling off it's fantastic specs... which indeed are great..but as the wife said..they've softened it too much🙄☺

    Huh?

    Huh?
The guy i know, started that D5 stuff as well, but he knew i wasn't interested,as he has said to me before,we can't seem to sell them to D3/4 owners.

    Now why would that be??

Wonder if this has anything to do with the lower standards Australia has for diesel fuel, or is it part of the trend away from diesel because of stricter emissions standards in Europe.
Remember Nissan only have a petrol Patrol, and the rumours are that the new Landcruiser is petrol only ?

Poor vehicle standards - press article

Australia misses out on smartest plug in hybrids because of poor vehicle standards | The Driven

As a result, we are unlikely to see these model features here any time soon. Instead, Australian importers will continue to bring in their older technology vehicles. This is because these are generally more tolerant of Australia’s low quality fuels, but they are also less fuel efficient.

The outcome? A triple whammy on the typical Australian new car buyer as that vehicle is:

    • more expensive in fuel use to run,
    • more harmful to the health of our population, and
    • making it ever harder to meet our CO2-e reduction obligations under the Paris Accord.

All changes 2027,when Euro 6 will start in Aus.Unless the time line is changed, which could happen.
So the crop of diesels and petrols, in the big players will probably be around in one form or another until close to then.
