    Defender 2020 TD240 18 inch Wheel Swap

    Hi
I own a 2020 TD240 with 20 inch wheels, looking to get a set of 18 inch wheels.
My question is will the TPMS system continually throw errors as the 18 inch Tuffant wheels will not have the Land Rover TPMS sensors ?.
Or is it easy buy and fit Land Rover TPMS sensors to the 18 inch wheels, and have the benefit of the cars TPMS system.
Any comments from those who may have changed wheels.
    Cheers

You don't need the Land Rover specific sensors, just generic ones that can be programmed like Autel 315/433 sensors. Once the sensor itself is programmed (not the vehicle) the car just senses them as usual.

I have the programming tool to and have already swapped to 18's on mine. I'm in VIC so can help you out with this if you want (as in program some sensors for you) send me a PM if you're interested.

I have attached a clip from the workshop manual to help you understand the TPMS learning process:

    You'll need 5 of these. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B074Q54...ing=UTF8&psc=1

These are the new style sensors anyways as Land Rover is switching. It's cosmetic anyways.

I fitted Tuffant 18s to my D5 and the tyre place change sensors over, no problems.

It's easier to just buy new sensors for 40 bucks a piece and program them, then to dismount, remove, remount (or leave them dismounted) the old tyres and then put them in the new ones. That way you can always switch your wheels, but it is a solution if you don't want to use the stock wheels again. If you're going to spend thousands on the wheels, it makes sense just to do it right the first time.

No worries just let me know and happy to help it's a really quick process. Ideally the sensors should be programmed before mounting, but you can do it after.

Hmm. I have five LR 20" wheels with their TPMS sensors and *six* Tuffant alloys. I've read that the TPMS receiver in the car can only deal with a maximum of ten sensors. Am I able to program the cheap sensors on the Tuffant wheels to appear to be the same five as the LR sensors plus one new ID?

The car automatically relearns any new compatible sensors. There is no limit per se because once you put the new wheels on, the old sensors are effectively overwritten after a short time period. Then when you put the old wheels back on, those are relearned. It’s very straightforward.

The sensors can certainly be cloned as well but it doesn’t make a huge difference other than not having to wait 15 minutes in park for the new sensors to be acquired.

A lot of his information is completely wrong.

TPMS getting recharged via piezoelectric? Not even sure where this is coming from which is a bit unfortunate, since most of their videos are useful. TPMS sensor never get recharged.

Yeah, I think you can say that about most of what they do. Most of the time you would be more interested in learning from the mistakes they make I.E. what not to do ... which is just as valuable. There's been plenty of cringe factor when they're tearing stuff apart ... especially on their new Defender!

To be fair they do preface most of what they film with "we're not the experts, we're just going to have a go".

I would say they could do with indulging in a little more research before "having a go" though.
    Cheers,

    Sean
