I agree that the mechanical lockers look to work better. However, driving through the brakes in a LR makes it a lot easier than relying on the electronic lag to take over and reduce wheel spin. So to an inexperienced person, the G Wagon would appear to be doing it better. For ride, comfort and all the other bits I would have a LR anyday, and they are bloody cheaper too!!
