Defender Vs G Wagon (Turn on subtitles)

Not sure if this has been posted already....

Electronic traction control vs Mechanical diff locks. The difference is clearly demonstrated in this spanish (I think) video. Just turn on subtitles to see what he is saying.

I agree that the mechanical lockers look to work better. However, driving through the brakes in a LR makes it a lot easier than relying on the electronic lag to take over and reduce wheel spin. So to an inexperienced person, the G Wagon would appear to be doing it better. For ride, comfort and all the other bits I would have a LR anyday, and they are bloody cheaper too!!

If you are going to compare against diff locks then why not just specifiy a diff lock in the Defender?

Remember traction control is just a mod of systems already in an ABS car - software not hardware so cost is virtually nothing for enhanced ability over normal open diffs.

Because the G comes stock with diff locks, and they couldn't get the rear diff lock version of the Defender for that test.

Then that aspect of the test is not really valid.

But the G had HT tyres and the Deefer had BFG AT's, so an advantage in tyres.

All valid IMO as they were tested as you can buy off the showroom floor at a certain spec level.

I found that the video clearly illustrated the difference between a fully locked vehicle & one with electronic traction control only. The fact that it was Defender vs a G Wagon was irrelevant when comparing the 2 4wd systems. Two different driving styles, one tightly controlled & the other a bit chaotic.

If you were to buy a Defender, would you option a rear locker after seeing the video?
