I can't be certain of my memory, but I think this was present on the one that was demonstrated to us when I was in an army cadet camp in 1958 while I was in highschool. It must have been a prototype I suspect.

My understanding was the guards were sloped to prevent them folding up when the gun was fired. And in answer to a comment above, none of the Gunbuggies I've seen, including mine, have thicker floors.
