G'day All,
Not much work done today, as I finished helping the good wife with her yard jobs, but I did manage to put fuel into the RHS tank, which is rigged with a temp/fuel line, I sat on the RHS tank, started her up and moved it about 1.5mtrs forward & rearward, at least I know the clutch works fine, there were no funny/abnormal noises, at least I won't have to push it anymore, next job will be grit blast/paint the steering wheel boss (spoked type) so I can steer it when I have to move back n forth, anyway the clip

Yesterday afternoon, I grit blasted the steering wheel, gee the paint was hard to shift in places, I couldn't go any further with it, as I had no high gloss black paint:(

Most of today has been taken up with connecting batteries, checking that all lights/horns etc are in working order, everything was fine until I checked 112-655 aka gunbuggy, the blinkers wouldn't work (flasher can faulty) so another was sourced from the bowels of the shed LOL:p and presto they worked, but no brake lights:mad:, first thing I checked was the fuse box, both fuses OK, and just by removing the fuses was enough to make the brake lights work??? anyway in the meantime waiting for the 2 club officials to arrive, I turned my attention to the bonnet.
As I'm having time off in December, I'm trying to get as many panels ready for painting as is possible, so I started with grit blasting around the rivet heads, as it's near impossible to clean around them with orbital sander, and if your not carefull, you will sand off the round head in a flash:o

after doing the rivet heads I hit it with etch prime.
The underside of the bonnet (stiffening ribs) always get a little rusty, very hard to clean, I have in the past taken the bonnet to pieces, but this one isn't that bad, so I grit blasted it myself, still need to finish it off on the under side

I ran out of grit:(, I do have a supply of Illmenite, but I don't think swmbo would like her green lawn BLACK:eek:, the lawn is hers n the Poodle Patrol's LOL.
Anyway I turned it over and started to sand the top, when the lads from the club arrived at 1710hrs

by the time they had checked all 7 Land Rovers & 2 No5's tea was ready, they headed home, and I packed it all away after tea, hopefully I will be able to get some paint delivered and pick up more grit later in the week, in the meantime I will keep plugging away at the topside of the bonnet, cheers Dennis:angel:

Way too hot to be outside for too long, so I decided that I would paint the steering wheel boss, after having grit blasted it a few days ago.
I thought about how was I going to keep the paint off the spokes??, idea:D, why not use a small diameter drinking straw!!, I found what I needed in swmbo cupboards in the kitchen sshhhh :p don't tell her LOL.
I needed six straws, cutting them in half, then cutting them open along the length of the straw, I slipped them over the spokes, they fitted like the proverbial 'finger in a dog's a**e':D.

the boss was then etch primed, and didn't take long to flash off, then a liberal coating of Gloss Black, and this is what it now looks like

This was yesterdays effort, finish off the clean up of the bonnet so I could etch prime it all over, I still have to make a few minor repairs to the spare wheel bracket (I must have given away all the good ones I had!!:() anyway I will be able to fix it.

This afternoon after work, in the heat :(:( 37.5c, I fitted the sill rails to both sides of 113-372.
The items in question had been painted some time ago,
I have painted both sides etc of all fittings DBG one side and Gloss Black the other, etch primed/flat black on the sides you can't see.

I'm still waiting for a tubing bender from Brisbane (it must be coming via the Nth Pole:mad:) I need to remake the fuel lines, fitting them to the fuel tap and then make the bends up to the fuel tank pickup, anyway maybe it will arrive before 2013 LOL:eek: cheers Dennis

What type of grit are you using for the grit blasting? Seems not to affect the aluminium at all.

From memory I think it's a Garnet/Aluminium % something, but I would have to ask where I bought it from. My favourite media is Illmenite, but it's way too expensive for me, cheers Dennis:angel:

Sorry about all the questions about the vent screens but I have another question...

When I mount my screens, the top and bottom mount points fit on the part of the bulkhead that is double skinned (just like in your pictures) - no worries to run a self-tapper through there - but the mounts on the ends of the screen sections sit down 'inside' the fitting area - if I whack a screw through there it will actually come through into the rubber vent seal in front.

Is that standard?

Mounted like this, I will have a 1¼" gap between the two screen sections where the vent mechanism passes through.

Is this correct?

Mate, the screws that hold the insect screens insitu are 2 different lengths, the screws that go into the 'double panels are 1/2" in length, the others that screw into the back of the vent seals are 1/4" in length, both are the same diameter, hope thats of some help, cheers Dennis:angel:

Awesome - thanks. I have the single wiper motor assembly (late Series 2a) and let me tell you, those screens are a mongrel to put in unless you pull everything else out :mad:

I have also sourced a second set of the screens so, when they arrive, both vehicles will have a set.
