50 Years ago last Tuesday 8/5/2018

Last Tuesday the 8th May, marked 50 years since Stanley Walter Middleton was RTA from Sth Vietnam, he was a National Serviceman and served his time in country @ 2 AOD (2 Advanced Ordinance Depot) located in Vung Tau.
Stan along with others were scheduled to fly out on the 7th May 1968, but the Vietcong had other ideas, they attacked the airfield with rockets and mortar and small arms fire, in the ensuing hours much damage was done and there would have been casualties on both sides
the all clear was given the next morning and a ? Qantas jet arrived bringing in replacements and taking those persons back to Australia who had completed their tour of duty, whilst walking out across the tarmac a Series 2A 88"GS with 4 MP's in it came along, some words were exchanged and possibly a thumb or two in a light hearted gesture saying you lucky B, anyway as they drove away Stan snapped this image

Now move on almost 42 years later, Stan was the organiser for re-unions and he started to gather photographs to collate into a website so that the me who served there could remember those and those who had since passed away.
REMLR & AULRO in the meantime had gone from strength to strength with forum users far n wide across this great land, when out of the blue I get a pm (from an AULRO forum user in Qld, and I can't remember who that was) to say that my newly acquired (well it was to me) S2A 88"GS was a Vietnam veteran an that he had seen an image of it in the website 2 AOD.
Well I had a look at the first opportunity and sure enough it was 113-372 or BLR-626 as I knew it for 40 years as it belonged to a local sawmill, hence the name it got from Ross Carswell after Graham Dunlop R.I.P bought it for me to save it rather than it be destroyed by some young fellow, I had BLR-626 picked up from Robert st Morpeth NSW on the 10/1/2010 I paid Graham for it and took it home

It was a sad looking machine when it first came up for sale way back in 2000,

I had just finished 112-501 a S2A 88"GS and was looking for another project, BLR-626 (aka 113-372) was for sale wasn't for sale, so i looked further afield and found 112-587 at Pollards @ Colo Heights, lo n behold 2 months into that project BLR-626 was for sale, so Graham bought it and kept it for me, I had it home a few hours and had the engine running, but over the next 4 days I reduced it to a bulkhead and rolling chassis

people have told me that I don't muck about when I start something and I think they may be right.
A few months into the project I managed to find Stan Middleton on F/book, he had his ph number there so I rang him up and had a good yarn, told him I had that Land Rover in his image with the 4 MP's sitting in it, he wrote down the ARN and as luck would have it he was given e few boxes of slides taken by another Nasho who serving as a MP, well Stan started looking through these slides and about the 4th slide in was this one

what a stroke of luck and a very clear image at that showing 113-372 in downtown Saigon in 1967, anyway Stan shared that image with me and I use it when the vehicle is on show.
Well it took me approx 14 months of full on slog, doing everything by myself to bring this vehicle back to life, it looks as good now as it did way back then,

it still runs strong, my daughter Fiona loves driving it especially on the 25th April, she travels up from her home in Camden to be a part of the day here in Cessnock, cheers Dennis

Yes Scott, I remember Graham telling me he was going to paint it prior to our R&R on Stockton beach ? 2002 he used 6 pressure pack cans of Brunswick Green to repaint it, cheers Dennis
