This was an update from September last year.
Obviously a fair bit has changed since this was written, but it shows a bit of background and history.

    A few pics too

An Old Friend Returns – REMUS ROVER

In the late 1970’s RAEME staff from the Puckapunyal Military Area formed the REMUS Rover team, focused on raising the profile of the corps and developing trade skills amongst active team members. The vehicle was donated from Army disposal agencies and operated on donated parts and corporate support via the RAEME Association. The vehicle competed in various enduro style races through-out Victoria and New South Wales, gaining exposure for recruiting people into RAEME and providing a social interest for RAEME members. During the late 1980’s early 90’s, REMUS activities was wound down due to various factors, predominately large scale movement of soldiers out of Puckapunyal to either Queensland or Northern Territory. The vehicle was retired and has since been in static storage in Bandiana / Bonegilla. The origin of the name Remus ( spelt RAEMUS ), is unclear, it has never been documented but always been referred to as Remus. It is believed to be named after a RAEME member circa 1942 whose nickname was Remus.

    Operational Concept
The vehicle belongs to the National RAEME Association, SO2 RAEME reserves the right to determine the actions and location of Remus at all times.
The principle for operations involving the Remus Rover Team is based on the original operating premise of Remus during the 1970’s / 80’s. The team is solely operated by RAEME members, other defence members may participate however all functions and decisions are solely for RAEME members.
Remus Rover is both an activity to develop trades skill for tradesmen in areas not normally exposed to during normal work environment and for a RAEME Corps promotional vehicle to support the recruitment and retention of corps members.

    The Future Plans
For the remainder of the year the team will focus on preparing the car for CAMS certification and driver training. With the workshop being in an Engineer unit it allows the workshop to have a prepared test track in the plant training “dust / mud bowl”. With this providing a private test track and race training facility equates to many hours of driving as well as the expected maintaining required in a race team. The team are planning to have the vehicle and drivers ready to start competing in 2013 if not earlier.

So for all those olds & bolds out there and anyone else who maybe interested we need corporate support to make this work. Advertising space is available ( the car is getting a complete re-spray ) for any interested agency.

    Team Management
The team has formed a provisional committee to enable the initial re-establishment of REMUS Rover to be conducted, all members within the Sth East area of QLD are welcome to join in and play a role within the team. You don’t need to be working on the vehicle to be working in the team, much sponsorship and liaison is required to establish the team again. Any RAEME member interested in joining the REMUS team please contact any one of the committee members listed below.

Just like years before the team has one simple rule, you work on the car / team, you get to drive / navigate the car on the track.

We pick up RAEMUS from Gonzos Performance Exhausts tomorrow, really looking forward to hearing her arc up with the new system . Gonzo does great work, we are very excited to get her back to finish her off for Finke.

My father along with John raced it till they handed it over to the apprentices as a learning tool. We lost all the pictures of it years ago to fire. Have you got anymor pictures.

Between Dad and me we've got heaps more photos, I just need to sit down and scan them. When I do, I'll be sure to post them up.

I know time is short with Finke being on Queens Birthday weekend (I'll be at the 40th Sea Lake Mallee Rally in Vic). Probably can't find the log book in time for that sorry. Not even sure if we do actually have it, haven't seen it in years. The last time Dad saw it was in his shed though.

    Heading off to Finke

We have been burning the midnight for a couple of weeks and have had some good luck. The original CAMS logbook application has been found at HQ CAMS enabling us to be reissued a CAMS log book in just enough time for us to make it to Finke. The car looks great and sounds fantastic, little screamo now has a certain growl.

    Finke over and done

Well a quick update, a massive week for the team, struggle after struggle to get to the race then get on the track. Prologue ( qualifying ) was good and bad, Dave went well but I rolled the car thankfully only panel damage. With hammers and pop rivet guns the car was ready to roll on race day. Looking remarkably unscathed, the arrival of the car amazed most of the other competitors when we lined up to start.

The old girl went really well, amazing us it went further than the car has ever gone in the Finke Last time in 1989 it went 35km and before that only 5 km. This year we did 116km and had to withdraw with a blown timing cover gasket dropping too much oil. With an engine rebuild and some softer springs settings we'll be back to show the tough old lady again.

The car was the crowd favorite, as we passed the competitors that had their car fail, it was fantastic to see them cheer us on. The old Landrover is well loved by the Off Road Racing Community and race fans alike . A rapid repair and we'll be working with injured and ill veterans on the test track as soon as possible.

We are looking for some spare front panels if anyone has some spare for us.

    Gday Guys,

My Name is Travis and i am one of the RAEMUS ROVER teams members. i came across this post when searching your site about information regarding disc brake conversion for series Rover. i have read through the posts and alot has happened since then. the team is now working with RSL Queensland and also Mates 4 Mates. both of these organisations have come on board as supporters of the team as we use the vehicle to help our injured and ill veterans.

we have competed in three events this year with varying success including entering the car in the Lockyer event that was on last weekend. we also hope to enter 1 more race at the end of november. we are also looking at developing a second vehicle which will have the underbody of a disco with coil springs and disc brakes but the shell will still be the trusty series rover that we know and love.

The changes that RAEMUS has undergone this year include rebarication of new shock mounts and fitting of racing shocks front and rear. The old 4 speed box finally decided it did not like working any more so we sourced a 5 speed LT77 and LT230 Tcase from British off road. this required selling of spare parts and driveline components we had laying around but we managed to get it sorted. as the new gear box and Tcase went in we fabricated some new solid mounts for the engine and also custom solid mounts for the transmission and Tcase mount. we also went through a stage of bracing and changing front and rear diffs on the car and they finally seem to be working a treat.

we intend to keep the old leaf sprung car running the plan is it will be mainly used for short course events and we are hoping to take 2 cars to Finke next year(2015). once we can find the support or money to allow us to fit a disc brake conversion we are hoping being able to stop the old girl will take some of the stresses off the car and allow us to finish a event reasonably unscathed.

i plan to keep an eye on this page now as we continue to work with the old car and develop the new one. i am always happy to answer any questions people might have and we are always looking for new team members to help us progress forward. if any one is interested in working with the team or sponsoring us in any way we are always open to new path ways. i also have alot of random series parts so if you need something hit me up and if i have it we can work something out.

and i nearly forgot to mention thanks to RSL Queensland Donation of new safety gear for the team and support over the next 3 years the team is now called RSL RAEMUS ROVER.

Thanks for looking and feel free to look us up on face book

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
