1968 sIIa 3/4 ton GS cargo

I picked up this series 2a about a year ago. looked on REMLR and it says its a 3/4 ton GS Cargo.

what features did a GS cargo have?

There are two centre facing seats in the rear just behind the bulkhead are these standard?

The carby on it now is a stromberg? were these originally fitted with a solex?

There are holes in the front bumper I imagine that it would have had a bull bar on the front?

    heres a few pics

Some other things which i am not unsure about the originality of. The drivers seat is adjustable and the fuel tanks have screw in dipsticks under the seats.

It also has a salisbury rear diff. I thought these wernt used until the siii.

    Cheers

To answer your first question re seats, Yes they did have inward facing seats in a GS L/R, but the seats that are fitted, well it's not those ones, I wouldn't know what they came out of.
Some military Land Rovers were fitted with a drivers adjustable seat, from memory they were in 109 Workshop (Wksp), 109 Fire Tender, & Bloodbox aka Ambulance, it is possible that it was fitted while in service or by a P.O. (another owner)
Salisbury differentail was std fitted to late S2A & S3, somewhere in REMLR archives there is a reference to Salisbury being retro fitted, or it could have suffered rear diff failure and was replaced by a P.O, hope thats of some help, cheers Dennis

finally started working on the land rover. Pulled the tanks out this week. planing on making a new set from stainless steel. one tank is pretty good only a small amount of rust. the other is dented and rusted through.

Hi! Great vehicle! My wife has an Ex Mil shorty.. The fuel tanks are exactly as you describe! Good project to get into here. Are you restoring to original standard or just to be able to use it? Either way it'll be good to get it back on the road! Here's SWMBO with hers before the strip down began...

Cheers. plan is to strip it back to the chassis for a tidy up then rego n drive it. Chassis is pretty good, the firewall needs a few plates welded in and it needs new brakes. Hows the shorty coming along?

looking at getting the rover running. the mechanical fuel pump is still there but has been disconnected. the 12v electric pump which has been connected works well. Can i remove the mechanical pump completely and just cut a plate to blank off the hole? or do i need to disconnect more?

You can remove the fuel pump, but they are available relatively cheaply, and arguably more reliable than electric pumps, although probably not much difference.

The Stromberg is a ring-in, it would have originally had a Zenith, but presumably a previous owner found it cheaper, easier or both to fit a Holden carburettor than to fix the Zenith. These work, but tend to be less than happy offroad when they may be at a steeper angle than on normal roads.

As others have said, plus the hardtop is not original - it would have been a softtop. Wheels are also not original. The holes in the bumper are for a brush guard.

Generally similar to the one I own, which now has a ute cab. Interestingly, mine has one dipstick marked in litres, the other in gallons.

I see a couple of anomalies - the screw type vent controls date to pre-1960, so are definitely not original. This has meant the trim covering the wiper linkage could not be fitted. The push button on the dash suggests the horn button on the steering wheel does not work - probably fixable. Missing Landrover badge on the grille. Mirrors, of course, are not original. Doors appear to have locks, also not original.
