    Military spring hangers?

    Hi All,

Can anyone tell me if these are military spring hangers and shackles? Shackles are pretty close to 100mm eye to eye.

Preempting my next question - will standard shackle pins fit in the military shackle plates?

    Cheers,

    Adam

The shackles themselves are not. The chassis double mount hole concept is similar to military but does look a bit home done.

so many things on this car are weird home mods. Its driving me mad!

The lower holes look to be 1 1/2 inches below the standard holes (which are in the correct location according to the chassis diagram in the manual). The rear ones are the same. Is that the correct offset for military spring hangers at least?

    [edit]

I guess I need to put the front of the springs into the top hole if those shackles are standard length, otherwise it will play merry hell with the castor. Although I drove it this way for years and never noticed anything weird. Bloody backyard tinkerers and their shenanigans!

These are the parts you need for a military set up. Unfortunately I don't have a full set. If you want more information send me a PM.

Looks very similar to the military front mount (just checked a IIa and III). Pins are standard.

    100mm is standard shackle length.

Slightly OT, but I assume that dampers (shock absorbers) on military leaf sprung series are different (longer) than civilian series? My series Forward Control has extended shackles. I'm trying to work out which shocks to try to find?

The shocks fitted to mine are stamped Toyota. No idea what they're off, probably a 40 series or something.

A point of caution - fitting either the longer spring hangers or the longer shackles without the other is going to have two effects. It will change the castor angle of the steering geometry, which is very likely to have adverse effects on the steering, and it will mean that the pinion shaft in the diff is no longer parallel to the output shaft in the transfer case, meaning that the angle is not the same on the two universal joints in the drive shaft. This will result in uneven drive, which may or may not be an issue, especially on a lwb where the angle is smaller. The fact that most Series Landrovers spend most of their time in two wheel drive means that it is easier to put up with a bit of vibration from the front shaft.

Both of these effects can be fairly easily eliminated by interposing a wedge between the spring and the axle. This used to be commonplace when most cars had beam axles and leaf springs in front, but I can't remember seeing anyone actually doing it on a Series Landrover!
