LPG number plate stickers. Laws?

Guys, I think it is important to realise why the stickers / plates are there for LPG installs.

If your car is involved in a prang, the fire service need to know that you have a gas system fitted. This is so that they can isolate the gas at the tank, should there be a problem, or a leak.

Now, metal v's plastic - simple really. Even if the number plate is blackened, and unreadable, a raised metal diamond in the middle of the plate is going to tell them LPG. If it is vinyl, plastic or whatever else, there is a good chance that it wont be noticeable during a fire.

Take it from me, there is nothing quiet as unsettling as standing next to a car that is on gas, that has run into a tree, the battery is shorting out internally, and we cant get to the isolation valve on the gas....

When I put my 101 back on the road in 2009, the roadworthy guy did not mention anything about tags - likewise when I went to the RTA to pay my money and collect my plates - again there was no mention of having stickers or plates indicating it was LPG.

So there was no requirement from the RTS to have tags.

A year later it was me who bought the stickers and put them - so certainly the registration authorities do not seem to be aware of the the requirements.

It is a $150.00 fine in Vic.
Probably something they would ping you on if they were having a bad hair day !!
Nearly every time I refill I see another car without the tags, so obviously well down the priority list.
I bet its something they check on these roadside RWC checks - where there is 6 cars a time pulled over...

I went to buy lpg stickers and looked everywhere, finaly found out at a lpg installer that the stickers are now illiegal (in WA at least).
Two lpg plates cost five bucks and I just screwed them in with the same screws as the private plates as I didnt want to make any more holes in the plates as they already cost a few hundred bucks.
Apparently you have to have them so if you are involved in a incident the fireies and cops can isolate the tank or work around it, its also for insurance as well.
Also if you have two lpg tanks you need two lpg tags on every licence plate, three tanks three tags, etc.
Mind you thats WAs regs, cant answer on anything east of the boarder.

With some installs I've seen it would be downright dangerous to even try and isolate a valve on the tank if the vehicle was on fire. Who wants to crawl under a burning 4x4 or ute to find the box, try to open it and turn the gas off. You can't even see the tank under sone of these cars, or it is hidden away internally.

I know I'm playing devils advocate here, but if you have a plate fitted over some personalised number plates, particularly the slimline or US style as are an option in qld, no matter where the plate was mounted it would obscure part of at least one of the letters or numbers, which technically is also an offence. So you do the wrong thing and wind up in trouble, as do you for the right thing. Catch 22!

Personally I can't see the problem with drilling 2 tiny holes in a plate.

Btw - the replacement cost of personalised plates is only a small fraction of the original purchase price if you later fit them to a vehicle without LPG and don't like the holes...

We have just returned from Qld Transport with our brand new rego plates for the 101 which runs on petrol/gas :D

We were informed by Dept of Engery and Mines that it is a requirement to have the LPG STICKERS on your number plates, he said you can get metal if you wish:) He also said you can buy them from any auto gas fitting place @$1.00 ea.

I posted it up. All states follow AS1425.

Whether you follow the law is up to you.

A verbal OK from an official is not the same as reading it in print.

For those afraid of 2 tiny holes devaluing their number plate :eek: on a series Land Rover a dob of sikaflex also counts as permanently attatched according to some fitters...

With my personalised plates, I'd be affraid that the permanent urothane bond would not release without damaging the plates.

I paid $45 for my personalised plates and a re-make is between $75 and $100.
