    Another LPG question

My 93 Vogue is being sold and the new owner does not want and will therefore remove the LPG system. He will have that system transferred (by a licensed fitter) to my 91 Highline as part of the deal. The LPG works perfectly but is nearly due to be re-certified.

    Please comment on the following:

Existing twin APA tanks will be removed so testing will be easy - or is it simpler and cheaper to buy two reconditioned tanks like the current ones? The latter are available for under $400 delivered

Any reason why the existing filler, hoses and control unit cannot be transferred to the other vehicle?

Ditto - swap the side-mounted petrol tank from the 93 and transfer it to the 91

    All advice appreciated

I recently got my 90litre tank tested - was removed from the vehicle and cost $250 so if you can get the right tanks with a 10 year recertification for $400 I would go with that.

I cannot see why the other components cannot be moved over to the other vehicle as long as they are OK.

Now I am not in NSW but here in the ACT if LPG is removed from a vehicle the vehicle has to go for recertification at the Government Inspection station (not an authorised inspection station) as the original LPG mod plates can only legally be removed by an authorised person. Same as getting LPG put on - needs to be approved by an authorised person.

Now the same draconian rules are unlikely to apply in NSW (and your authorised fitter can do it all) but make sure you know what the process is before you start.

Hoses and copper pipes for liquid LPG are supposed to be replaced in what will be a new installation. The fitter may choose to reuse some hoses if they are in very good condition, ie the rubber hasn't gone hard. Reusing copper is a no-no.

LPG tanks should be inspected by the LPG fitter for external damage, in particular rust. They should not cost a fortune to be tested if in good condition. "Reconditioned" just means tested and painted, you don't get all new fittings inside.

The petrol tank may be running a different filler setup, no idea how easy that would be to modify. I don't know which year the RRC went to the high mounted filler.

Under bonnet stuff should fit pretty much the same so long as there isn't something mounted where the stuff was on the '93.

Thank you for your advice. Now I know what questions to ask and what sort of bu#&it to avoid.

Both the LPG and petrol fillers are mounted side by side inside the fuel flap - High on the side panel for this model. Should not be a problem to remove the mounting plate and reuse it

Call me slack .... I'd just move it all over and tell no-one ..... The lines should be ok if you don't bend them getting them on/off .... if that is possible

Why don't you install and wire it all, and take it too a LPG installer to plumb up and compliance ? (if they are willing).

I have been known to do many "workaround" jobs but this is not one of them. None of the gas fitters I know would risk his licence when he did not do the installation himself

Ward is the one swapping the engines currently. I deal exclusively with Coopers because they are utterly reliable, but also because I manage their website including writing all of the technical articles on the GCA site

Unfortunately, GCA no longer do LPG conversions, so once they remove the LPG from the Vogue, I'll be taking all of the LPG parts and the petrol side tank to a specialist to have it installed in the 91 The guy at Seven Hills seems to be the recommended expert

Last year had my twin tanks (combined 90 litres) retested here in Qld. Tester would not retest tanks if I removed them. Cost $800 as were difficult to remove and install and because the tanks, though mounted side by side, are separate as are joined by hoses and each tank has its own blow off valve/outlet/ shut off valve etc. If they are welded together with a bridging pipe, are then considered one tank and would have been half the cost.

I'm sure I have two separate tanks and I shudder to think what the cost will be to transfer the parts to the other vehicle. The sill-mounted petrol tank also has to be transferred so that is another cost.

It is tempting to forgo the LPG but at 85 cents per litre versus $1.40 for petrol. I'll persist, at least until I get a firm quote. Even a trip between the farm and Goulburn is 170 Km, never mind about anything more extensive!
