After a very wet day on 25th, Australia Day (26th) didn't turn out too bad - the sun showed itself briefly in the morning and there was only a couple of short showers during the afternoon. The biggest effect the weather had was that numbers of display vehicles and punters were less than previous years but there was a good steady stream (no pun intended) of people during the afternoon.
A very interesting part of the day - apart from the offers of free Land Rovers and power take offs - was a meeting with the UK based Product Strategy Manager of Land Rover Global Marketing, a very nice chap who we shared a cup of tea with and who was seeking input regarding the Australian requirements for the future Defender replacement. The lengthy discussion that took place was quite beneficial to all involved and the opportunity was very much appreciated by us. I forgot to mention the need for longer range fuel tanks as standard but I'll be in touch with him again re that important aspect.
Anyway, back to the Motorfest and as nothing supposedly happens on AULRO without pictures, here are a few -

Wet weather but a good day otherwise.
As Roger has said the wet weather and probably that of the day before reduced the number of participants and also visitors to the city for the Australia Day celebrations.
There were thirteen Land Rovers and seven Toyota Landcruisers (organised through the Toyota Landcruiser Owners Club of Australia) in Hyde Park South near the Pool of Reflection in front of the Anzac Memorial. There were other military vehicles from the Australian ex-Military Vehicle Collectors Society (AMVCS) and World War II Jeeps between the Pool and Park Street. An 80" Land Rover was also displayed with Illawarra Vintage Car Club in the main Motorfest in Macquarie Street.
Land Rovers represented were Series 1, 2, 2A, 3 and a Defender, two Range Rovers, a 101 Forward Control and a Discovery 1; they were displayed by LRE-NSW members and members of the Land Rover Owners Club of Australia (Sydney Branch) and some other owners. The new NRMA guidelines have decreased the age requirement so that any vehicle twenty years or older (previously thirty years) or a model run-on of such a vehicle can now attend.

This year our fledgling club organised for the 4WD Association's trailer to be on our display - promoting 4WD clubs from all over NSW and the ACT. It was a great idea and supported by the NRMA. We will try to make it a regular feature of the 4WD area display as there are many country visitors on the day and it gets the message to the public that we are responsible, help communities and get out in the bush enjoying ourselves.
Various videos and photos of trips by owners were displayed on the large screen and promotional pamphlets were handed out. A few Land Rover videos were also run throughout the day.
The trailer is well equipped with posters and pamphlets, the media centre, a 240V Generator, BBQ etc and with its lift-up side and rear panels offered protection to the contents and the viewers (and also the feeders!).
All in all our first public outing went well. Thanks to our members who brought vehicles or helped out on the day and in the planning and preparation.
Bob
