    Question Perentie 6x6 rear propshaft

    Hi,

After 10K Km the rear propshaft gave way in the middle of the double yolk just after the centre bearing, the real alarm is the old part still had the sticker and other packaging still attached to it from when the army replaced it, so this leads to the question, is the unit prone to breaking and has anyone one else had trouble with it and how did they repair it.
do you have to buy the whole shaft or do they still do that repair kit AUG1998?

Is it a 6x6 only part, the number i have is: AYG7202?

The little ball joint in-between the 2 yolks has destroyed itself, was it meant to contain grease or was it a sealed bearing?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Had you greased the shaft?

I have found it is very difficult to get a grease gun on those nipples. I have had to buy a needle type attachment to grease those nipples. I would suspect they had not been greased in a long time. Mine hadn't.

I too had to buy a needle adaptor for the grease gun to get at the yokes, which are all good, its a ball and cup arrangement that sits in the middle that i never knew was there that has failed?? does it have its own grease nipple, found a hole but no thread for grease nipple.

Have taken a few photos, bit hard to see into the middle.

Can you buy the replacement middle section?

I put free wheel hubs on mine and have never needed to use it in anger yet. I just put them in from time to time to lube them. Prop shaft hardly gets used then.

What make of free wheeling hubs did you use as I was reading the thread about that, with some makes apparently leaking from seals and other makes not made anymore.

I think I will get the shaft rebuilt with a greasable bearing that sits in the middle. It was doomed to fail if it can not get grease.

Do you know if this rear shaft is from another Land Rover or 6x6 specific part?

    Cheers Keith.

AVM make the ones to fit the rear - Ashcrofts in the UK are the place to get then, even with freight it is considerably cheaper than buying locally in Australia. The original O ring seals do tend to weep but you can fix this by fitting thicker O rings. That rear shaft is specific to the 6X6 perentie but very similar to a front driveshaft on a Stage 1 series 3. I think the only difference is the tube length.

I used Shute Upton FWHubs and got Mal Story Of Key 4wdrives to broach the splines. But that was a long time ago but the bloke that does his axles now could probably do it.

Have you found an answer yet?

Hope this helps if you are still looking for an answer.

Google PUBR002 - E TO P GROUPS.pdf and look on pages 72,73,74 & 75. It shows an exploded view and lists part numbers.

You have prompted me to have a look at mine as 6 wheel drive is very important to me.

I have read that the removal of the shaft when towing over 200Km is advised. I wonder if that would be ok to do if traveling long distance on bitumen?

    AVM Free Wheeling Hubs

Hello Brian. I have replaced the Inner Seals on the rear axles but am not entirely confident that it is going to stop the diff oil from migrating along the axle. The fit is not tight enough on the axle which suggests they are more “Splash Guards”.
I got some 40 x 3 mm O Rings to replace the AVM FWH ones to get a better seal but now can’t turn the Hub from 4x4 to 4x2 etc. Have I got the right size or did you smear grease or similar on your O Rings?
