Hi, I'm a new member looking at buying a 6 x 6 for trips up to the Kimberley and desert crossings. I used 110's in the Tanami Desert and Africa in the '90's for mineral exploration and loved the ride and the 4WD capability. The Ambo and General Maintenance modules look good as camper conversions, however in the Specs on remlr.com, the General Maintenance unit has a kerb weight of 4650Kg vs the Ambo at 3650 Kg. As they both have the heavy fibreglass module on the back, I'm surprised there is a tonne difference. Is the GM unit heavier because of steel drawers and cabinets? Or are the Ambo specs wrong?. Stripped out for conversion, which would be lighter?

My initial preference is for an Ambo body as it comes with aircon, but I'm looking for advice on modifications, ie

1) How much trouble/cost would it be to cut a long window panel in one side of the fibreglass module to bring in some light and views? (and would the module handle it strength-wise)
2) Is the Ambo too heavy as a conversion, should I go for something lighter?
3) Which of the 6 x 6 variants is likely to have had the easiest life in the military?

Any feedback much appreciated,

Mike
